Barrio Alegría launches fourth year of FARO Community Grants to empower positive change in Reading

Barrio Alegría, in partnership with the Wyomissing Foundation, has announced the return of its FARO Community Grants for a fourth consecutive year. Designed to inspire community engagement and foster grassroots initiatives, the FARO grants aim to empower individuals and organizations working to make a difference in Reading. This unique program prioritizes applicants who are often excluded from traditional philanthropy and reflect the diverse communities they aim to serve.

The FARO grants provide one-time awards of up to $5,000 to support projects that bring people together to create meaningful change. Barrio Alegría emphasizes its commitment to sharing and shifting decision-making power to the community. A panel of volunteers from Barrio Alegría will review applications and make recommendations to the Wyomissing Foundation Board of Directors for final approval.

The grants are open to nonprofit organizations with annual budgets under $250,000, as well as informal groups, associations, and individuals without a 501(c)(3) designation. These applicants must partner with a fiscal sponsor to manage funds and reporting requirements. Barrio Alegría offers support to those seeking a fiscal sponsor.

Applicants must also demonstrate their ability to collaborate with others in the community. Projects must benefit Reading residents and neighborhoods, with preference given to applicants based in the city.

Successful projects should foster community connection through shared values and create a positive impact. While one-day events such as festivals or celebrations are not eligible, they may be included as part of larger, long-term initiatives. Grants cannot be used for individual financial assistance, fundraising, political events, or religious purposes. Grantees will have one year to complete their projects and use the funds.

Applications will open on December 15, 2024, and the deadline for submission is January 31, 2025. Winners will be announced on May 1, 2025.

The application process includes four required components: Contact information, grant questions, a video, and pertinent attachments.

Once completed, applicants will receive a confirmation email. Applications can be submitted online via www.barrioalegria.com, or paper applications can be picked up at Barrio Alegría’s office at 140 N. 5th St., Reading, PA.

Barrio Alegría is available to assist applicants with the process and answer questions.

The FARO grants embody Barrio Alegría’s mission of uplifting communities through grassroots initiatives and inclusivity. With funding made accessible to small nonprofits, informal groups, and individuals, this program continues to serve as a catalyst for community-driven projects that leave a lasting impact in Reading.
