GED Grads Honored during ‘Unity in the Community’ Event in Reading

The Reading School District may be beginning its year with remote classes, but that doesn’t mean students won’t need school supplies. To give kids a jump start on the year, United Community Services held its inaugural Unity in the Community Day event Saturday afternoon.

Held in the parking lot of their building on Front Street, the multifaceted event provided free school supplies for kids, honored local front-line workers, and promoted several community resources including the US Census, Safe Berks, Pennsylvania State Police, and the Reading Area Water Authority.

Among the festivities, the main event during Unity in the Community Day was the Youth Build GED certificate presentations.

Due to his dedication and work ethic, Jayon Rhodes, was named valedictorian of the class of ten. Rhodes spoke to the class about his inspiration for completing his GED.

“From the help and support of Youth Build, they’ve been with us every step of the way” said Rhodes.

“And now I stand here today thinking, wow, such a small, amazing group of people can make such a big impact. We will remember this day for the rest of our lives. I just hope our success, opens doors for others.”

Following Rhodes, classmate Kirsten Moyer also spoke to the class, with her son in hand.

“I’ve been a Youth Build student for little over a year now, I’ve moved three times, and had a little boy, all while staying in contact with Miss Megan (Youth Build Recruiting Specialist)” said Moyer. “I honestly can’t believe I’m standing here right now, it really is an honor.”

As a nonprofit, United Community Services provides youth education services to residents ages 17-24 who are studying for their GED or looking for employment.
