Playground surface improvement work is now underway at several parks across the City of Reading, resulting in temporary closures as construction crews complete upgrades over the coming months.
The project is funded through a Community Development Block Grant totaling $667,333.28 and includes improvements at Schlegel Park, Pendora Park, Neversink Park, 3rd and Spring Park, and Essick Park. The work is being completed by Delaware Environmental Services.
City officials said crews began work Tuesday at Schlegel Park. Construction will move sequentially from park to park, with approximately two weeks scheduled for each location. Parks will remain closed during active construction for public safety.
The current project schedule is as follows:
- Schlegel Park: May 12 through May 27
- Pendora Park: May 28 through June 10
- Neversink Park: June 11 through June 24
- 3rd and Spring Park: June 25 through July 10
- Essick Park: July 11 through July 26
All work is weather dependent and schedules may change if needed.
“This is part of our continued commitment to investing in safe, quality parks across the city,” said Reading Mayor Eddie Morán. “We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make these improvements for our neighborhoods and families.”
The city said updates will be shared throughout the project, and parks will reopen once work at each location is completed.
