Police ramp up DUI enforcement in Berks for prom and graduation season

Law enforcement agencies across Berks County will increase DUI enforcement efforts throughout the 2025 prom and graduation season, according to an announcement from the North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program. The initiative, which runs from May 2 through June 22, will include sobriety checkpoints, roving DUI patrols, and “Cops in Shops” operations.

The enforcement campaign aims to deter impaired driving during a time when alcohol-related crashes among teens historically spike. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about one-third of alcohol-related teen traffic fatalities occur between April and June.

“Police departments throughout Berks County congratulate the graduates of 2025,” said Sergeant David Bentz, Enforcement Coordinator. “We want to remind those graduates that police will take a zero-tolerance policy for underage drinkers. That same zero-tolerance policy applies to anyone found driving while impaired—whether by alcohol, marijuana, or other substances.”

The announcement warns that adults who provide alcohol to individuals under 21 will be arrested, and underage drinkers will also face arrest. Officials stress the potential consequences of underage drinking and impaired driving, including fatal crashes and legal liability for party hosts.

Supporting the campaign are statistics from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety: 41% of teens ages 16 to 19 say they or their friends are likely to drink or use drugs on prom night. 54% of students who drink on prom night consume four or more alcoholic beverages. More than 85% of teens say they or their peers would rather drive impaired than call a parent for help.

To help keep teens safe, parents are encouraged to discuss expectations ahead of time, offer a safe space for gatherings, consider hiring professional transportation, and model responsible driving behavior.

The North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program coordinates efforts across multiple counties, including Berks, and is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Residents who suspect impaired drivers are urged to call 911. To report underage drinking, call 1-888-UNDER-21.
