The Reading Housing Authority will open its public housing waiting list beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, for several apartment and household categories across its properties in Reading.
Applications will be accepted online beginning at 8 a.m. Sept. 8 and must be received by midnight Thursday, Sept. 10.
The waiting list will open for studio apartments for one-person households and one-bedroom apartments for two-person households in which applicants are elderly, age 62 or older, or have a disability and are at least 18 years old. Those units are located at Rhodes, Eisenhower and Hubert Apartments, Kennedy and Franklin Towers, and Hensler Homes.
RHA will also accept applications for general occupancy units ranging from one to four bedrooms at Glenside and Oakbrook Homes. Applications for five-bedroom units will be accepted for Oakbrook Homes only.
Families must qualify for the bedroom size requested based on RHA’s occupancy standard of one bedroom for every two people, with limited exceptions.
RHA uses a one-offer policy, meaning eligible applicants cannot select a particular housing development. Instead, they will be offered the first available unit for which they meet the criteria.
The housing authority said not every application received during the three-day period is expected to be placed on a waiting list. If the number of applications exceeds more than 18 months of predicted unit availability, RHA may use a lottery-based selection process to determine which applicants are added.
Preference will be given to individuals and families who live in the City of Reading, as well as families with a household member who is a qualifying service member or veteran under Pennsylvania law.
Being accepted onto a waiting list does not guarantee housing assistance. Applicants must also meet eligibility requirements established in RHA’s Admissions and Continued Occupancy Policy.
RHA said reasonable accommodations may be requested by people with disabilities to assist them in accessing its housing programs.
Applications can be submitted through the Reading Housing Authority website beginning Sept. 8.
