The City of Reading will join communities across the country in observing National Police Week from May 11 to 17, a time set aside to honor law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty and to recognize the strength of their families and colleagues.
As part of the observance, several landmarks in Reading will be lit in blue throughout the week, including the William Penn Memorial Fire Tower, City Hall, 5th and Penn, and the Penn Street Bridge. The citywide blue light tribute serves as a visual reminder of the dedication and sacrifice made by law enforcement officers.
“During my time as a Bridge and Tunnel Officer in New York City, I saw firsthand the commitment and sacrifice that this profession demands,” said Mayor Eddie Morán. “This week is a time to remember the officers who never came home, and to stand with their families and departments.”
Police Chief Elias Vazquez also reflected on the significance of the week, stating, “We remember those who served with integrity and gave their lives to protect others. We’re grateful to the City for helping us honor their memory and reflect on the values of public service.”
Residents are encouraged to take time during the week to reflect and show appreciation for the service of local law enforcement officers who work to protect the community every day.
