The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On February 18, 2025, Sleepy Hollow Athletic Club – Bar, located at 482 Westley Rd, Mohnton, PA 19540, was inspected and found with the following violations: Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in cooler and small refrigerator in cook area, is not being date marked. The floor / wall juncture in kitchen area is not coved and closed to 1/32 inch. The coving is missing the coving around the floor in the area where the small refrigerator is.
On February 18, 2025, Pizza Hut #37146, located at 204 Lancaster Ave, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed a buildup of grease and old food residue on the shelving under the table used for cutting cooked pizzas.
On February 18, 2025, Italian Delite, located at 113 E Main St, Birdsboro, PA 19508, was inspected and found with the following violation: Thermometer for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in the 2-door refrigeration unit next to the pizza oven. Corrected.
On February 18, 2025, Island Pizza, located at 3060 Limekiln Rd, Birdsboro, PA 19508, was inspected and found with the following violations: A food employee was observed touching deli meat – a ready to eat food – with bare hands. Corrected. Observed a few containers of food stored directly on the floor in the walk-in freezer and cooler, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Facility has sanitizer test strips for the dishwasher and glass washer, but does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink.
On February 18, 2025, Dollar General #15084, located at 2471 Lancaster Pike, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Severely dented, swollen, distressed canned item observed in the canned food aisle intended for use or sale in the food facility. Corrected. Observed two 160z bottles of chocolate milk in the refrigerated foods section available for sale past the best by date of 02/08/2025. Corrected.
On February 18, 2025, Chicho Bella Pizzeria & Subs, located at 2342 Lancaster Pike, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Multiple food items prepared by the facility in the kitchen area refrigerators not being date marked by the facility. Corrected. Loose rubber door gaskets observed on the Bain Marie used for pizza preparation. Observed deeply scored cutting board on the Bain Marie used for sandwich prep not resurfaced or discarded as required. Corrected. Ice machine in basement has mold slime build up around ice mold plate and back interior wall area. Observed old food residue on the nonfood contact surfaces of the self-serve soda machine.
On February 19, 2025, Village Tavern, located at 63 N Center Ave, Leesport, PA 19533, was inspected and found with the following violation: Soda lines and non-integral cold plate device installed in ice bin and in contact with ice used for consumer beverages.
On February 19, 2025, Redner’s Market #26, located at 5473 Pottsville Pike, Leesport, PA 19533, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed multiple shelves in the large dairy walk-in cooler covered with pieces of cardboard being used to cover the metal shelving units. The cardboard is not considered a cleanable, durable surface. Mop sink in the chemical cage is not sealed to the wall. There is a gap along the edge that could allow dirty water to accumulate between the wall and the mop sink.
On February 19, 2025, Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen, located at 900 Crossings Blvd, Elverson, PA 19520, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed spilled food residue in the bottom of the refrigerator in the warewashing area. No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the restroom areas to remind food employees to wash their hands.
On February 19, 2025, Family Dollar Store, located at 323 N 4th St, Reading, PA 19601, was inspected and found with the following violations: Severely dented, swollen, distressed canned items observed and intended for use or sale in the food facility. observed one can of pillsbury rolls opened in the refigerated selling area.
On February 19, 2025, Family Dollar Store #6825, located at 433 W Douglass St, Reading, PA 19601, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed equipment with an accumulation of dust, dirt, food residue, debris on non-food contact surfaces. Clean refrigerator along rear of store.
On February 19, 2025, Exodo Grocery Store, located at 1262 Spruce St, Reading, PA 19602, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food Employee working was observed with persistent sneezing, coughing, and/or runny nose. Shellfish, milk, eggs held at, rather than 45°F or below as required. Commercially processed ready to eat food held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Grease trap needs to be cleaned and documented. Professional cleaning of hood system needed and dated.
On February 20, 2025, Taco Guac N Bowl, located at 1040 Lancaster Ave, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the bain marie, is not being date marked.
On February 20, 2025, Sebastiano’s Italian Restaurant, located at 3227 Perkiomen Ave, Reading, PA 19606, was inspected and found with the following violations: Chlorine chemical sanitizer residual detected in the final sanitizer rinse cycle of the low temperature sanitizing dishwasher was 0 ppm, and not 50-100 ppm as required. Owner contacted the service company and will sanitize dishes in the 3-compartment sink unit the dishwasher is repaired. The interior of the ice machine, a food contact surface, was observed to have residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected.
On February 20, 2025, Pizza Time, located at 640 Lancaster Ave, Reading, PA 19611, was inspected and found with the following violations: Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Cleaning frequency of the walls and by register needs to be done daily so the accumulation doesn’t build up. Changing of the mop heads need to be done frequently. Mops are not being hung to air dry.
On February 20, 2025, Mikura Asian Cuisine & Sushi Bar, located at 840 N Park Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed in-use knives and /or cleavers stored between table edges, an area not easily cleaned & sanitized. Corrected. Observed canned food items stored in the employee restroom, a prohibited area for food storage. Corrected during this inspection. Time in lieu of temperature being used in the food facility to control ready to eat potentially hazardous foods (sushi rice) without written procedures or documentation to verify disposition of food. New log book started immediately. Foods (sushi items) are served raw or undercooked to the customer’s request; however, a written consumer advisory (on the menu, table tent, or placard) is not provided to the consumer on the large restaurant menus. Corrected during this inspection by adding a copy of the advisory from the paper menus to the large menus. Thermometer for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in the 2-door refrigerator at the sushi bar. Corrected. Loose rubber gasket observed on the 2-door True refrigerator in the kitchen. Observed deeply scored wooden cutting board not resurfaced or discarded as required. Corrected. Cleaning products and bottle of Tylenol stored with food items at the sushi bar and on the dry storage shelves in the kitchen. Corrected. Food facility using rodent bait placed in bait stations which are not covered and tamper resistant. Corrected.
On February 20, 2025, Mary Jane’s Kitchen, located at 1816 State Hill Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility does not have available quaternary ammonia-based sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration for the sanitizer tablets that will be used in the facility. Floor near the double doors at the back of the kitchen is cracked/rough and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. The floor / wall juncture in some areas of the kitchen is not coved and closed to 1/32 inch.
On February 20, 2025, Jukebox Cafe, located at 535 S Reading Ave, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed eggs being stored above ready to eat foods in the refrigerator in the cookline area. Observed soups being placed in a hot hold unit that were not properly reheated to at least 165 degrees before being put in the hot hold unit.
On February 21, 2025, Zaytoon Kabob & Grill, located at 760 Woodland Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink.
On February 21, 2025, Lil’s Bakery, located at 845 B Woodland Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility does not have the correct type of sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink. Corrected.
On February 23, 2025, KFC, located at 3120 N 5th St, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violations: Fryer is leaking oil causing build-up of grease on the floor. Maintenance request has already been submitted for repair.
On February 23, 2025, Domino’s Pizza, located at 3007 N 5th St, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violations: Certified Food Manager certificate not displayed.
On February 23, 2025, Carvel Store #2172, located at 3320 N 5th St, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violations: Several wall areas are not smooth and easily cleanable. Walls have several holes in need of repair. Mops are not being hung to air dry.
On February 24, 2025, Tikal Restaurant, located at 450 Centre Ave, Reading, PA 19604, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food in the Marie bain area stored open with no covering. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the bain marie, is not being date marked. debris on the floor needs to be cleaned daily.
On February 24, 2025, All Right Stop Shop, located at 1500 N 13th St, Reading, PA 19604, was inspected and found with the following violations: need thermometers in the coolers.
On February 25, 2025, Anrit Sunny LLC, located at 348 N 5th St, Reading, PA 19601, was inspected and found with the following violations: Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the deli, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in cooler equipment.
