Facility re-using single-service food plastic containers: Restaurant Inspections, May 1, 2025

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On April 23, 2025, Schuylkill Valley Middle School, located at 114 Ontelaunee Dr, Leesport, PA 19533, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink.

On April 23, 2025, Schuylkill Valley Elementary School, located at 62 Ashley Way, Leesport, PA 19533, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink. Observed water leaking in a couple areas of the dish table at the ‘clean’ end of the dishwasher. A maintenance request was submitted during this inspection.

On April 23, 2025, Andali’s Family Restaurant, located at 40 S Centre Ave, Leesport, PA 19533, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed single-service, single-use articles (take-out containers and foil tray pans) stored in the basement dry storage area which were not in protective packaging.

On April 24, 2025, Windsor Inn, located at 38 W Lancaster Ave, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Working containers in kitchen area, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On April 24, 2025, El Punto Boricua, located at 1635 Centre Ave, Reading, PA 19601, was inspected and found with the following violations: Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the front cooler, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Old food residue, dishes and utensils observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing.

On April 24, 2025, Anyeli Deli & Grocery, located at 1059 Buttonwood St, Reading, PA 19604, was inspected and found with the following violation: Old food residue, dishes and utensils observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing.

On April 25, 2025, Vivi Bubble Tea, located at 450 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611, was inspected and found with the following violation: Mops are not being hung to air dry.

On April 25, 2025, Vesuvio, located at 8495 Lancaster Ave, Bethel, PA 19507, was inspected and found with the following violations: Knife in use was observed stored between a cold hold unit and a table. This is not a sanitary way to store a knife in use. Corrected. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in cooler, is not being date marked.

On April 25, 2025, Mama’s Pizza, located at 4425 Pottsville Pike, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food employees observed in food prep area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers. Equipment food contact surfaces and utensils are not being immersed for a minimum of 30 seconds in the quat or iodine sanitizing compartment of the manual warewashing sink. Corrected on inspection. Fan guards in walk-in refrigerator are soiled.

On April 25, 2025, Little Oley Tavern, located at 2068 Farmington Avenue, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food employees observed in the cookline area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers. The Food Facility Operator shall be the Person in Charge or shall designate a Person in Charge and shall ensure that a Person in Charge is present at the food facility during all hours of operation. The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. sliced lemons and limes in the refrigerator in the back bar area stored open with no covering. Can opener in the cookline area is dirty and needs cleaning and sanitizing. Roast Beef was held at 108 °F, in the hot hold area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Operator took out the roast beef reheated it to 160 degrees. Observed single use plastic food containers being reused to store food products throughout the facility. Observed boxes of potato chips and cooking oil being stored directly on the floor in the storage area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired and is no longer valid. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in the cookline area, stored in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). Sliced lemons, limes, cherries to make alcoholic beverages are not being stored in ice to maintain proper temperature below 41 degrees. An insect control (fly Trap) device located in the kitchen area with potential to contaminate food, equipment, and / or utensils. The handwash sink in the outdoor bar area was blocked by a fire extinguisher and door and not accessible at all times for employee use. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the refrigerator throughout the facility, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. The ceiling fans throughout the dining areas of the food facility is extremely dirty, dusty, and in need of cleaning. Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Observed a large amount of grease build-up in the vent hood and fryer area of the cookline area, and needs to be cleaned.

On April 25, 2025, El Gallito Mexican Bakery, located at 948 Buttonwood Street, Reading, PA 19604, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food in cooler under bain marie appeared to be outdated and adulterated. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the bain marie, is not being date marked. exhaust hood / exhaust air duct needs cleaned or filters changed as it is emitting dust and dirt into the air. Temperature gages for cooler were not available.

On April 26, 2025, Joe’s Place, located at 5 Spring Valley Road, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violations: The food facility does not employee a certified employee as required. Manager has committed to a class on 6/23/2025. Food dispensing utensil in melted butter observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food. Corrected on inspection. Mops are not being hung to air dry. Observed wall adjacent to stove with food splashes/residue. Women’s toilet room is not provided with a covered waste receptacle for sanitary napkins. Signage is not posted in rest rooms for Employees to Wash Hands before returning to work.

On April 26, 2025, Five Star Nutrition, located at 3316 N 5th Street Highway, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food employees observed in food prep area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers. The food facility does not employee a certified employee as required. A June 23, 2025 ServSafe class is scheduled. Food dispensing utensil in ice bin observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container.

On April 27, 2025, Goodwill Beneficial Association, located at 100 Madison Avenue, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violation: The ice machine white interior panel, a food contact surface, was observed to be unclean.

On April 28, 2025, Carruso’z Pizza Shop, located at 7656 Lancaster Avenue, Mount Aetna, PA 19544, was inspected and found with the following violations: Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in pizza dress station equipment. No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the men’s and ladies rest room to remind food employees to wash their hands. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view.

On April 29, 2025, Target #2529, located at 4599 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading, PA 19606, was inspected and found with the following violation: The mop sink in the Pizza Hut area is missing some caulk along the wall. Corrected during this inspection.

On April 29, 2025, Marathon, located at 16617 Pottsville Pike, Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration.

On April 29, 2025, Little Sicily Italian Restaurant, located at 100 Love Road, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: The equipment/wall junctions at the 3-compartment sink and mop sink are not sealed to prevent splash from accumulating behind the equipment.

On April 29, 2025, Joe’s Kwik Marts (#1045) Exxon, located at 2855 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading, PA 19606, was inspected and found with the following violation: Old unused equipment stored in back area should be removed from food facility.

On April 30, 2025, Moe’s Southwest Grill #1913, located at 1070 Berkshire Boulevard, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Door located in the back area of the food facility has a gap at the bottom corner and does not protect against the entry of pests. Observed dirt and old food debris on the floor under equipment throughout the facility. Coving tile is missing near the mop sink. FRP panel on the wall at the mop sink is not properly sealed at the bottom.

On April 30, 2025, Mario’s Pizza, located at 159 S Reading Avenue, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violations: Tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese was held at 47°F, in the bain marie in the pizza making area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the bain maries, is not being date marked. The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Observed bedding and clothing materials in the food facility, indicating use of the food facility as living or sleeping quarters. The handwash sink in the prep area was blocked by pans and not accessible at all times for employee use. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the prep area. Food dispensing utensil in the ingredient containers was stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Facility’s drainage system is draining wastewater slowly indicating a potential blockage or build-up of waste in the drainage system of the facility. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired and is no longer valid. Observed the vent hood of the grill is extremely dirty and in need of a good cleaning as evidenced by the large amount of grease build-up.

On April 30, 2025, Main Street Pub & Restaurant, located at 505 Main Street, Bally, PA 19503, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food employees observed in the prep area, not wearing proper beard covers. Facility is re-using food plastic containers which are intended to be a single-service or single-use article throughout the facility. Clams and tomatoes in the walk-in-cooler are stored open with no covering
