Floor below grill and fryers with excessive grease: Restaurant Inspections, April 10, 2025

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On April 3, 2025, Trainer’s Midway Diner, located at Route 78 Exit 16 & Midway Rd, Bethel, PA 19507, was inspected and found with the following violations: Assorted food, in the basement freezer area, is a packaged food stored or displayed in direct contact with ice due to broken gasket allowing for ice damning near door. Interior kick plate of the ice machine is observed with black organic matter and is in need of cleaning. Food facility has an employee that has taken food safety training program; however, the food safety program was not an ANSI/CFP accredited Certified Food Manager program. Manager is scheduled for a course in August. Floor in basement was observed with pooling water. Please clean up water and push to drain to prevent pooling of water.

On April 3, 2025, Rise-N-Shine Cafe, located at 241 Godfrey St, Bethel, PA 19507, was inspected and found with the following violations: Foods that are served raw or undercooked to the customer’s request; however, a written consumer advisory (on the menu, table tent, or placard) is not provided to the consumer. New food facility in operation more than 90 days and has not employed a certified food employee as required.

On April 3, 2025, Pollo’s Don Juan 2, located at 1665 State Hill Rd, Unit 980, Reading, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Raw eggs are stored above canned soda and vegetables in the 2-door refrigerator. Corrected. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Hood filters have an accumulation of grease/dirt. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view.

On April 3, 2025, Horning’s Market of Bethel, located at 8316 Lancaster Ave, Bethel, PA 19507, was inspected and found with the following violations: Severely dented, swollen, distressed canned items observed in sales floor area and intended for use or sale in the food facility. Corrected, removed from shelves. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Several knives hung on the knife magnetic holder in the deli were observed with food debris. Please lean knife prior to hanging on knife holder. Nonfood contact surface of vegetable shelving air grates were observed with black organic matter and in need of cleaning.

On April 4, 2025, Sajal Hot Chicken and Jyro, located at 164 N Main St, Kutztown, PA 19530, was inspected and found with the following violations: All foods, that are refrigerated ready to eat time/temperature control for safety food, in the refrigerators, are not compliant with datemarking by being labeled with a discard or use by date of no more than 7 days, and requires discarding. No paper towel dispenser or paper towel observed at sink on cookline area. Corrected, paper towel put at sink. Dispenser needs to be installed.

On April 4, 2025, River Rock Academy at Amity Primary Center, located at 2144 Weavertown Rd, Douglassville, PA 19518, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed the nonfood contact surfaces of the hot hold unit to have a build of old food residue and apparent slime in the area that holds the hot water.

On April 4, 2025, Oley Valley School District (High School), located at 17 Jefferson St, Oley, PA 19547, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink (quaternary ammonia sanitizer). Wall in the corner of the dish room has a significant amount of peeling paint and is in need of repair.

On April 4, 2025, Glenside Magnet School, located at 501 Lackawanna St, Reading, PA 19601, was inspected and found with the following violations: Mops are not being hung to air dry.

On April 6, 2025, Willow Glenn Park – Konopelski Katering, located at 94 Park Ave, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed cases of food stored directly on the floor in the walk-in freezer area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required.

On April 6, 2025, Shucos Juanita’s at Willow Glenn, located at 94 Park Ave, Reading, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Cooked chicken was held at 55 °F, in the serving area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Corrected, put on ice. The handwash sink located in the cook area does not have water at a temperature of at least 85°F. Generator needs to be repaired, or a temporary cooler filled with hot water and spigot needs to be available. Corrected.

On April 6, 2025, Romano’s Italian and Mexican Food at Willow Glenn, located at 94 Park Ave, Reading, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Temporary hand wash station was not set up. Corrected.

On April 6, 2025, La Costenita de Guerrero at Willow Glenn, located at 94 Park Ave, Reading, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Temporary hand wash station was not set up. Corrected.

On April 8, 2025, The Railroad House, located at 152 Woodrow Ave, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Pulled beef was held at 121 °F, in the hot hold unit at the cookline area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Corrected. Fryer basket observed with broken wires and needs to be repaired or replaced. Floor below fryers was observed with excessive debris and grease build up and in need of cleaning.

On April 8, 2025, Penske South, located at 2675 Morgantown Rd, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Observed an apparent slime buildup on the nonfood contact surface of the interior of the ice machine.

On April 8, 2025, Penske North, located at 2675 Morgantown Rd, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed deeply scored cutting board on the Bain Marie not resurfaced or discarded as required. Observed an apparent slime build up on the nonfood contact surface of the ice machine.

On April 8, 2025, Michelangelo’s Pizzeria, located at 500 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611, was inspected and found with the following violations: A utility sink or curbed cleaning facility with a floor drain is not provided in the food facility. The mop sink has been removed from the closet in the restroom. Owner has not yet installed a mop sink. Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – observed water leaking at the cold water handle for the handwash sink in the kitchen. Some light bulbs are not shielded or shatter proof in the back food preparation area.

On April 8, 2025, Louie’s Kitchen and Bar, located at 12 Village Center Dr, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Multiple foods were held at 100°F, in the hot hold area by the ice machine, rather than 135°F or above as required. Corrected. Hood system observed to have a heavy buildup of grease and is in need of cleaning. Observed deeply scored cutting board on the first Bain Marie on the cook line not resurfaced or discarded as required. Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Floors and walls observed with a heavy buildup of old food residue. Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – observed connection leaking at the faucet by the ware washing machine.

On April 8, 2025, J R’s Pizzeria, located at 24 Village Center Dr, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed the bulk flour bin to be crack near the top and in need of replacement. Observed deeply scored cutting board on the Bain Maire not resurfaced or discarded as required. Observed cooking equipment/bottom of hood vent grill area, with encrusted grease and soil accumulation.

On April 8, 2025, GNA Ristorante Pizzeria, located at 421 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611, was inspected and found with the following violations: Thermometer for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in the 2-door bain marie unit at the cooking line. Corrected. Wall/ceiling in the dishwashing area has peeling paint. This area is scheduled for repair. Working containers of cleaner were stored on the same shelf with food equipment in the back food preparation area. Corrected.

On April 8, 2025, Big Bertha’s Grill, located at 499 Mountain Home Rd, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed cases of food packaging stored directly on the floor in the front counter area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Corrected. Food facility does not have available sanitizer chlorine test strips or test kit to determine appropriate chlorine sanitizer concentration. Floor below and behind the grill and fryers was observed with excessive grease and debris build up and in need of cleaning.

On April 8, 2025, 7 Brew Drive Thru Coffee, located at 3582 Penn Ave, Reading, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food contact surface of the bulk ice bin transfer bucket is not smooth, easily cleanable and/or resistant to pitting, cracking or scratching. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Mops are not being hung to air dry. Corrected.

On April 9, 2025, Spuds Events and Catering MFF4, located at 116 Spook Ln, Fleetwood, PA 19522, was inspected and found with the following violations: Fryer baskets (3) were observed with broken wires. Please repair or replace.

On April 9, 2025, Daniel Boone School District High School, located at 501 Chestnut St, Birdsboro, PA 19508, was inspected and found with the following violations: The ice deflector in the ice machine, a food contact surface, was observed to have residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected.

Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Tipsy Times in Douglassville, Reppert’s Candy in Oley, Nicky’s & Son Pizzeria in Boyertown, Smoothie Q in Douglassville, Malizzi Cakes & Pastries Mobile Unit #2 in Douglassville, Letterman’s Diner in Kutztown, Kirbyville Farm Market in Fleetwood, Jim Neidermyer Poultry & Deli in Kutztown, Jen & Jessie’s Creamery in Oley, Italian Delite in Birdsboro, Gehris Meats in Topton, Fry Daddy’s in Kutztown, Fleetdoos Area SD High School in Fleetwood, Bear Creek Mountain Resort, Wilson SD West MS in Sinking Spring, Wilson SD Green Valley EL in Sinking Spring, Timber Lane Handcrafted in Mohnton, Reading High School Cafeteria in Reading, City Girl Juice in South Heidelberg Township, Wilson SD Southern JH in Sinking Spring, Wilson SD Cornwall Terrace EL in Sinking Spring, The Joanna Store in Morgantown, Spuds Events & Catering in Fleetwood, Ruscombmanor Volunteer Fire Company in Fleetwood, Joanna Food Wagon in Morgantown, Daniel Boone SD Primary Center in Birdsboro.
