Food observed in prep area slimy to the touch/spoiled/moldy: Restaurant Inspections, March 13, 2025

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On March 5, 2025, Twin Valley Middle School, located at 770 Clymer Hill Rd, Elverson, PA 19520, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed the fan guards of the condensing unit and the surrounding surfaces to have an accumulation of dust and dirt. Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – observed leaking at the drain at the base of the handwashing sink in the front service area.

On March 5, 2025, Twin Valley High School, located at 4851 N Twin Valley Rd, Elverson, PA 19520, was inspected and found with the following violations: Severely dented canned item observed in and intended for use or sale in the food facility. Corrected. Observed the nonfood contact portions of the self-serve ice dispenser for coffee to have buildup of residue. Corrected.

On March 5, 2025, Redner’s Warehouse Market #42, located at 4870 Penn Ave, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: 12 cans of Enfamil A.R. added rice baby formula was observed on the retail sales floor and had expired 3/1/2025.Corrected, these were pulled off the shelf. Severely dented, distressed assorted canned items observed in clearance area and intended for use or sale in the food facility. Corrected. Fan guards in the meat cooler were observed with dust build-up and in need of cleaning. The handwash sink in the bakery area was blocked by cart and not accessible at all times for employee use. Corrected.

On March 5, 2025, Mangia! Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria, located at 322 E Wyomissing Ave, Mohnton, PA 19540, was inspected and found with the following violations: Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in cooler and Bain Maries, are not being date marked. Pre-cooked pasta, sliced cheeses, sauce held for more than 24 hours not date marked. Corrected.

On March 5, 2025, Grill Volunteer Fire Co. #1, located at 739 Mountain View Rd, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Nozzle of soda dispenser, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected. Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – the handwash sink at the bar appears to have a clog. Water builds up in sink and drains slowly.

On March 5, 2025, Dunkin’ Donuts, located at 3818 Penn Ave, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: The quat concentration in the sanitizer bucket in the prep area was observed at 0 ppm. Monitor sanitizer to ensure it is at proper concentration. Corrected. Floor in the dry storage/back door area is made of tile and is cracked / roughened / and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. This needs to be repaired.

On March 5, 2025, Countryside Fries and More, located at Leesport Farmers Market, Leesport, PA 19533, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Working container (spray bottle) at front counter, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On March 5, 2025, China Moon Restaurant, located at 4888 Penn Ave, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in cooler, is not being date marked. Shelving was observed lined with cardboard boxes. This surface is not smooth and easily cleanable. Cardboard needs to be removed.

On March 5, 2025, China III, located at 319 N Furnace St, Birdsboro, PA 19508, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed a build-up of grease and old food debris on the floor near the fryers and on the side of the adjacent refrigerator.

On March 6, 2025, Leesport Diner, located at 5407 Pottsville Pike, Leesport, PA 19533, was inspected and found with the following violations: An open employee’s beverage container was observed on the ice machine in the kitchen. Corrected. Food was held at 50 °F, in the refrigeration unit under the grill, rather than 41°F or below as required. Corrected immediately and owner called for service for this unit. Observed an accumulation of loose dust/dirt on some of the ceiling tiles above the cooking line. There is an accumulation of dirt and old food debris along the edges of the floor under the equipment in the food preparation area of the kitchen.

On March 6, 2025, Bally Family Diner, located at 1605 PA-100, Barto, PA 19504, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food in the refrigerators and walk-in-coolers is being stored open with no covering. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the refrigerators and walk-in-coolers, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Observed a large build-up of old grease on the walls, floor, and on the fryers.

On March 7, 2025, Wyomissing Hills Elementary Center, located at 110 Woodland Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food employee observed in serving area, not wearing proper hair restraint. Corrected. Working container (spray bottle) in the serving area, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On March 7, 2025, Smucker Farm Fresh Poultry, located at 845 Woodland Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. New food facility does not yet employ a certified food manager.

On March 7, 2025, Sinking Spring Veterans, located at 550 Columbia Ave, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Floor below the fryer was observed with excessive grease build up and in need of cleaning.

On March 7, 2025, Sheetz #289, located at 4661 Penn Ave, Reading, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Fryer basket observed with a broken wire. Corrected. Drain below soda machine was observed with excessive slime build up. Corrected.

On March 7, 2025, Rosa’s Family Restaurant, located at 7156 Bernville Rd, Bernville, PA 19506, was inspected and found with the following violations: Assorted food items were held at 49 °F, in the cold hold unit at the cookline area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Service has been called, and ice will be added to keep foods at the correct temperature.

On March 7, 2025, Legacy Cigar Lounge, located at 525 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611, was inspected and found with the following violations: The deflector in the ice machine and one of the soda guns at the bar, food contact surfaces, were observed to have residue and were not clean to sight and touch. Corrected.

On March 7, 2025, Crave Cafe, located at 4600 Penn Ave, Unit B, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Fan guards in the walk-in cooler were observed with black organic build up and in need of cleaning.

On March 10, 2025, Kutztown SD Middle School, located at 10 Deisher Ln, Kutztown, PA 19530, was inspected and found with the following violations: Back door located in the kitchen area of the food facility has a gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals.

On March 11, 2025, Paradise by the Slice, located at 69 Penn Ave, Wernersville, PA 19565, was inspected and found with the following violations: Fryer basket was observed with broken wires. Corrected. Gasket on left side reach in door of the pizza toppings cooler was observed damaged and not smooth and easily cleanable. Food facility is reusing plastic souffle cups, which are intended to be a single-service or single-use article. Corrected. Non-food contact surface of the sprayer nozzle at the three compartment sink in the dough room was not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Wall in the downstairs dry storage area, has a hole, or is broken and in need of repair. Floor below the fryers was observed with excessive food and grease build up and in need of cleaning.

On March 11, 2025, New Happy Family LLC, located at 810 Oley St, Reading, PA 19604, was inspected and found with the following violations: Facility was listed as out of compliance. Food observed in the food prep area, slimy to the touch / spoiled / moldy and is adulterated. Food in the food prep area stored open with no covering. Thermometers for ensuring proper food temperatures are not calibrated and/or functioning properly. Prep table, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Floor / wall / ceiling, in the * area, is made of *, and is not durable, smooth, non-porous, non-absorbent. Outside area of the facility has grease drippings from the grease trap. Lighting in back prep area does not have proper lighting (50 footcandle).

On March 12, 2025, Saucony Creek Brewing Co, located at 100 S 7th St, Reading, PA 19602, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food in the prepping area stored open with no covering. Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the food prep, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Thermometers in cooler at prep table was not available. Mops are not being hung to air dry.

On March 12, 2025, Rocky’s Pizza, located at 445 Spring St, Reading, PA 19601, was inspected and found with the following violations: Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the cooler, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Install paper towel dispenser at handwashing sink near prep table, also in the rest rooms. Mops are not being hung to air dry.

On March 12, 2025, Riverside Beneficiary Association, located at 1742 Pear St, Reading, PA 19604, was inspected and found with the following violations: Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the refrigerator and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Thermometers for ensuring proper temperatures of food are not available or readily accessible. Three compartment sinks behind the bar need to be cleaned daily/regularly. Exhaust fans need to be cleaned.

On March 12, 2025, Mike’s Tavern, located at 135 Exeter St, Reading, PA 19601, was inspected and found with the following violations: Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the refrigerator, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. No hot water in men’s bathroom. Mops are not being hung to air dry.

Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Rite Aid #7861 in Morgantown, Laureldale Athletic Association in Muhlenberg Township, Takkii Ramen in West Reading, Special Occasions by Panvino in Wernersville, Moose Lodge #0523 in Hamburg, Isaacs Restaurant and Deli in Sinking Spring, Arby’s #7714 in Hamburg, Trish’s Specialty Cheese Cakes in West Reading, Dollar General #24213 in Lenhartsville, The Barn at Walnut Grive in Lenhartsville, Kutztown Area SD High School in Kutztown.
