The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On May 22, 2025, Wilson SD SH Lower House, located at 2601 Grandview Boulevard, West Lawn, PA 19609, was inspected and found with the following violation: A can opener blade was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected.
On May 22, 2025, Sweet Beginnings, located at 43 E Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violations: Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the refrigerators, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Food facility is reusing single use plastic containers, which is intended to be a single-service or single-use article. Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Observed a large build-up of grease on the fryer, walls, and floor of the cookline area.
On May 22, 2025, Church of the Good Shepherd UCC, located at 35 W Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in the storage area closet, stored in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). Observed facility reusing single-use plastic containers to store food in the refrigerator and freezer.
On May 24, 2025, Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar, located at 3050 North 5th Street Highway, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violations: Floor drain under service line has an accumulation of food residue. Clean pans stored where they are potentially exposed to contamination.
On May 28, 2025, True’s Cuppa Love, located at 5 E Penn Avenue, Wernersville, PA 19565, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility hot water heater is not producing enough hot water to supply kitchen, and restroom sinks at the time of this inspection. Restroom sink is 93 degrees, kitchen is 64.
On May 28, 2025, Sam’s Wyomissing Bistro, located at 1714 State Hill Road, Wyomissing, PA 19610, was inspected and found with the following violations: Loose rubber door gaskets observed on the 2-door Migali refrigerator. Facility has the replacement gaskets on site and will get them installed. Ceiling in the dishwashing room has loose/peeling paint. Food facility does not have an outside waste receptacle for storage of trash. Dumpster enclosure has been cleaned out and the dumpster is to be delivered today. Hot water handle is not working at the 2-compartment sink behind the bar. This sink will only be used as a dump sink until the issue can be corrected.
On May 28, 2025, Penn Werner Hotel, located at 5 Penn Avenue, Wernersville, PA 19565, was inspected and found with the following violation: No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the men’s restroom area to remind food employees to wash their hands.
On May 28, 2025, Lisa’s Sweets & Treats MFF3 at Leesport Farmers Market, located in Leesport, PA 19533, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration.
On May 28, 2025, Lillis Ranch House, located at 2738 Penn Avenue, Reading, PA 19609, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility is reusing plastic black souffle cups as a utensil, these are intended to be a single-service or single-use article. Corrected. Can opener blade was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected. No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the employee restroom to remind food employees to wash their hands. Corrected.
On May 28, 2025, BBQ & Eggacy, LLC at Leesport Farmers Market in Leesport, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed an accumulation of grease and old food debris on the floor under the fryers in the Eggacy area. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink. Some prepackaged food items made in the facility are not labeled properly with the name of product, ingredient statement, and/or distributed by statement. The handwash sink in the Eggacy area was blocked by a bucket and was not accessible at all times for employee use. Corrected. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Certificate is available but not posted. The handwash sink in the Bar-B-Q area does not have single use towels. Corrected.
Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Wilson SD Senior High School, Wendy’s #19303 in West Reading, We Are PA Proud in Temple, The Fool Cafe in Reading, Shelbourne Beer Distributor in Exeter Township, Royal Farms #402 in Douglassville, Midtown in West Reading, Dutch Maid Bakery in Muhlenberg Township, Wendy’s #19128 in Elverson, Starbucks Coffee #62517 in Elverson, Goose Lane Egg Farm in Sinking Spring.
