The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On September 10, 2024, New Happy Family LLC #391009, located at 810 Oley St, Reading, PA 19604, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food in the cooler stored open with no covering. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the refrigerator is not being date marked.
On September 10, 2024, Magic Wok, located at 101 W Buttonwood St, Reading, PA 19601, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food under the bain marie in the cooler area stored open with no covering. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the cooler, is not being date marked. The floor had a build up of grease and soil.
On September 10, 2024, Crooked Hen, located at 2233 Lancaster Pike, Shillington, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Working containers in coffee/server area, used for storing cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.
On September 11, 2024, Twin Valley High School, located at 4851 N Twin Valley Rd, Elverson, PA 19520, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed three severely dented canned items observed in dry storage area that are intended for use in the food facility. Corrected. Observed a knife used for food preparation with the tip broken off. Corrected.
On September 11, 2024, Redner’s Quick Stop #74, located at 8381 Allentown Pike, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violations: Several containers of food in the reach in cooler in the deli area stored open with no covering. Corrected. Spray bottle in mop sink area taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.
On September 12, 2024, Tulpehocken SD Jr/Sr HS, located at 430 New Schaefferstown Rd, Bernville, PA 19506, was inspected and found with the following violation: The handwash sink located in the dish area does not have water at a temperature of at least 85°F. Manager will put a sign at sink to use the sink in the prep area until repairs are made or construction is finished on building.
On September 12, 2024, Plum Creek Farm Market & Creamery, located at 5035 Bernville Rd, Bernville, PA 19506, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food dispensing utensil in yeast and flour observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Corrected. Food contact surfaces of five spatulas is not smooth, easily cleanable and/or resistant to pitting, cracking or scratching. Corrected. Interior kick plate of the ice machine was observed to have pink organic residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected.
On September 12, 2024, Pine Forge Academy (HS), located at 361 Pine Forge Rd, Boyertown, PA 19512, was inspected and found with the following violation: Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in cooler and reach in refrigerators, is not being date marked.
On September 12, 2024, Liberty Ale House, located at 1501 Lancaster Ave, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food in the cooler area stored open with no covering. Not enough drainboards, utensil racks, or tables to allow for storage of soiled and/or cleaned items before and after cleaning.
On September 13, 2024, Redner’s Quick Shoppe #52, located at 4800 Penn Ave, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed wet wiping cloths on the counter in the deli area not being stored in sanitizer solution. Corrected. Foods were held at 123 °F in the right side of the hot-hold unit in the deli area (beef, pot pie) and 120 °F in Hot Hold Case #1 (sandwiches), rather than 135°F or above as required. The sandwiches in the hot hold case were able to be transferred to Hot Hold Case #2, and the products in the deli hot hold unit were thrown away. Work orders were put in to repair both pieces of equipment.
On September 13, 2024, Poor Richard’s, located at 64 Star Rd, Hereford, PA 18056, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration.
On September 13, 2024, Paparone’s Pizza Restaurant, located at 3803 Penn Ave, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed in-use knives and/or cleavers stored between table edges, an area not easily cleaned & sanitized. Corrected. Wall-mounted french fry slicer, a food contact surface, was observed to have dried food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the kitchen area. Corrected.
On September 13, 2024, Folino Estate Vineyard & Winery, located at 340 Old Route 22, Kutztown, PA 19530, was inspected and found with the following violation: A food employee was observed touching and slicing a raw tomato – a ready to eat food – with bare hands. Corrected.
On September 13, 2024, Chick-fil-A #02348, located at 4675 Perkiomen Ave, Reading, PA 19606, was inspected and found with the following violations: A temperature measuring device for verifying the sanitizing water temperature in the final rinse of the hot water sanitizing dishwasher is not available. The handwash sink near the dishwasher was blocked by gloves and was not accessible at all times for employee use. Corrected. The automatic sensor is not working for the handwash sink near the dishwasher. There are two other handwash sinks available for use until this one can be repaired.
On September 14, 2024, LBS-N-OZS, LLC, located at 2934 N 5th Street Hwy, Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violation: An open employee’s beverage container was observed in a food preparation area.
On September 16, 2024, Tulpehocken SD Bethel EL, located at 8390 Lancaster Ave, Bethel, PA 19507, was inspected and found with the following violation: Women’s toilet room is not provided with a covered waste receptacle for sanitary napkins.
On September 16, 2024, River Rock Academy at Amity Primary Center, located at 2144 Weavertown Rd, Douglassville, PA 19518, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed 10 chocolate and low-fat milk cartons in the cold hold unit that were being offered beyond the sell by dates of 9/11/24 and 9/14/24. Corrected. Dock-style door located just outside the back door of the kitchen area has a large gap at the bottom and does not protect against the entry of insects and other pests.
On September 16, 2024, Daniel Boone Area Schools Amity Intermediate, located at 200 Boone Dr, Douglassville, PA 19518, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed a mold-like build up on the interior plate of the ice machine. This area is a nonfood contact surface. Observed a slime build up on the drain of the pre-rice sink in the ware washing area. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in prep area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). Corrected.
On September 17, 2024, Wendy’s #19304, located at 15 Daves Way, Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violations: Cooked bacon in the prep/ cookline area stored open with no covering. Corrected. Observed cases food stored directly on the floor in the walk-in freezer area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required.
On September 17, 2024, Shepherd’s Touch Farm, located at 233 Gunhart Rd, Mohnton, PA 19540, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food Facility receiving shell eggs which are not labeled properly and/or do not contain safe handling instructions. Corrected on-site by removing from sale. Food facility is using an approved non-public water system, but does not have current laboratory testing results for water potability.
On September 17, 2024, Hipoke Ramen, located at 520 E Lancaster Ave, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Mops are not being hung to air dry.
On September 17, 2024, G&J Pizzeria & Bakery, located at 501 Main St, Blandon, PA 19510, was inspected and found with the following violations: Bowls were observed stored in two bulk containers in the bakery. Souffle cups were observed stored in one container of spice in the pizzeria. Corrected. Tomato sauce was held at 76°F, in the cookline area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Sauce was taken out and put in hot hold unit not heated to 165°F first. Corrected. Exhaust hood vents above fryers are excessively dusty, and in need of cleaning.
On September 17, 2024, Brooklyn Place, located at 101 Fifth Ave, West Reading, PA 19611, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility has test strips to monitor chlorine-based sanitizer, but does not have the correct type of sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink when using the sanitizer tablets. The slicer, a food contact surface, was observed to have dried food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected.
On September 17, 2024, Brecknock Elementary School, located at 1332 Alleghenyville Rd, Knauers, PA 19540, was inspected and found with the following violations: Severely dented canned item observed in dry storage area are and intended for use or sale in the food facility. Corrected. Observed dead mouse on the control device in dry storage area that had not been removed. Corrected.
On September 17, 2024, Brandywine Heights SD High School, located at 103 Old Topton Rd, Mertztown, PA 19539, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food dispensing utensil in a container of granola was observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Corrected. The handwash sink in the dish area was blocked by cart with floor mats on it and was not accessible at all times for employee use. Corrected.
On September 17, 2024, BB’s Grocery Outlet, located at 150 Morview Blvd, Morgantown, PA 19543, was inspected and found with the following violation: Severely dented and distressed canned item observed in the baby formula section are intended for use or sale in the food facility. Corrected.
On September 17, 2024, American Diner, located at 411 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611, was inspected and found with the following violations: Thermometer for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in the black refrigerator near the walk-in cooler. Observed drips coming from the condenser fan in the walk-in cooler. Facility is in the process of repairing the bottom drip pan to correct the situation.
On September 18, 2024, Union Fire Co #1 of Kulptown, located at 1082 Chestnut St, Douglassville, PA 19518, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed a build of a mold like substance on the nonfood contact surfaces of the 2 ice machines. Working containers in the bar area, used for storing cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.
On September 18, 2024, Mama Licha Mexican + Italian Restaurant, located at 14949 Kutztown Rd, Kutztown, PA 19530, was inspected and found with the following violations: Shaker containers of spices in the cookline area, are not labeled with the common name of the food. Ground pork was observed thawing in standing water in the three-compartment sink, which is not an approved thawing method. Observed ground beef cooling at room temperature on the prep table, which is not a proper cooling method. Corrected. Several containers of food in the walk-in cooler were observed opened and portioned with no dates. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration for quat (Blue tablets or Chlorine). Observed bedding and clothing materials in the food facility, indicating use of the food facility as living or sleeping quarters.
On September 18, 2024, Fleetwood Area SD – Middle School, located at 407 N Richmond St, Fleetwood, PA 19522, was inspected and found with the following violation: One rubber spatula located in the prep area, are not in good repair or condition. Corrected.
On September 18, 2024, APlus Sunoco Market, located at 3123 Pricetown Rd, Fleetwood, PA 19522, was inspected and found with the following violations: The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Milk was held at 47°F, in the walk-in cooler, rather than 41°F or below as required. Walk in cooler door was observed open and the cooler was turned off while employee stocked the cooler. Cooler was turned on and door was closed. Two half gallons and 2-quart sized milks were observed in the customer facing shelves of the walk-in cooler with an expiration date of September 6, 2024. Corrected. Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in refrigerated equipment holding deli sandwiches and milk at the coffee bar. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. The water temperature of the wash compartment side of the manual ware washing sink was 72°F, rather than not less than 110°F, as required. Several shelves in the walk-in cooler were observed with mold and in need of cleaning. The handwash sink located in the counter area and restroom does not have water at a temperature of at least 85°F. Counter sink water temperature was 67°F Hot water heater was turned off due to a leak. The handwash sink in the counter area does not have single use towels, continuous towels, or air-drying device. Corrected. No sign or poster posted at the handwash sinks in the dish area, counter area, and restroom area to remind food employees to wash their hands. Ceiling tiles missing and damaged in the dish area, and need replaced.
