Person in charge was unable to correctly answer food safety questions: Restaurant Inspections, August 6, 2026

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On 8/1/2026, Leininger Meats, located at 2934 N. 5th Street Hwy., Reading, PA 19605, was inspected and found with the following violation: Utensils observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing. Corrected on inspection.

On 8/4/2026, On the Hook Fish & Chips / CCHD #1563, located at 3805 Perkiomen Ave., Reading, PA 19606, was inspected and found with the following violation: Time in lieu of temperature being used as a control for Time/Temperature Controlled for Safety (TCS) foods, but batter and battering flour were observed being held for more than 4 hours. If TCS foods are held at room temperature, they must be used or discarded within 4 hours. Document time tracking. The handwash sink was blocked by and not accessible at all times for employee use. Hand sink is for handwashing only. Sanitizer test strips were not supplied. Provide test strips. Observed batter mix stored directly on the floor, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required (unless on wheels). Remove mix from bag after opening and transfer to a lidded container that is either 6″+ off the ground or on wheels. Observed cardboard being utilized as a floor covering. Facility may provide anti-slip mats if desired. Discontinue use of cardboard for this purpose. Coleslaw was held at 46°F, in the standing fridge, rather than 41°F or below as required. Coleslaw had been in unit for 3.5h, so it was served for an additional 0.5h before the remainder was discarded using time as a public health control. Ensure that cooler is able to maintain foods at 41F or below. Other TCS foods were removed from unit until it can be determined if unit is functioning. Dish soap and sanitizer were not supplied to 3-bay sink. Facility must have the supplies and capacity for warewashing at all times while in operation. Facility usually washes dishware at commissary and has back-up utensils onboard. Supply dish soap and sanitizer before opening tomorrow. The food facility does not employ a full-time certified employee as required. Person in charge was unable to correctly answer food safety questions. Facility must employ a full-time certified food manager and post CCHD CFM certificate.

On 8/5/2026, Starbucks Coffee #50235, located at 5 Dave’s Way, Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violation: The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view.

On 8/5/2026, Lyons Exxon, located at 1 W. State Ave., Lyons Station, PA 19536, was inspected and found with the following violation: Back door located in the back of the store area of the food facility has a gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals. This is a repeat violation and needs to be repaired.

On 8/5/2026, Dollar General Store #30127, located at 835 State St., Mertztown, PA 19539, was inspected and found with the following violation: Wall in the back-room area is made of drywall and has a hole and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface.

On 8/5/2026, Burger King #12924, located at 12 Jetson Dr., Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violation: Floor in the drive thru area is made of grout and is cracked / roughened / and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. Please repair to prevent pooling of liquids due to not being smooth. Back door located in the dry storage area of the food facility has a gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals.

Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Stopper’s in Birdsboro, Echo Hill Country Store in Fleetwood, The Hen Shed, LLC in Hamburg, and Esterly’s Sandwich Shop in Bowers.
