Duryea Hillclimb returns to Reading: Over 100 racers from 17 states set to compete

Racing enthusiasts from across the country are gearing up for the annual Duryea Hillclimb, which will take place in Reading on August 17-18. This year, nearly 100 racers hailing from 17 states, including as far away as Texas, are expected to compete in the highly anticipated event.

The Duryea Hillclimb, first established in 1951, is a key fixture in the Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association (PHA) Championship Series. The event is sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and organized by the Blue Mountain Region SCCA.

Known for its challenging 2.2-mile course, the race starts at the bottom of Duryea Drive, at the intersection with 13th Street Extension, and concludes on Skyline Drive at the William Penn Memorial Fire Tower.

Among the competitors returning this year is Ron Moreck of Kingston, PA, last year’s overall winner and current course record holder. Moreck will face tough competition as he seeks to defend his title, with several past champions aiming to reclaim their “King of the Hill” status. Additionally, several fast drivers from southern states will be making their debut at the Duryea Hillclimb, adding to the excitement.

The racing action kicks off on Saturday at approximately 9:15 a.m. and will continue until about 4:30 p.m. On Sunday, the competition will resume at 9:00 a.m. and wrap up around 4:00 p.m.

Spectators are encouraged to attend, with admission being a voluntary donation that supports Pagoda-Skyline, Inc., a local non-profit. A shuttle bus service will be available on both days, transporting attendees to the Fire Tower and various spectator areas. Ridership on the shuttle is also by voluntary donation, with proceeds benefiting the Third and Spruce Reading Recreation Center.

The Duryea Hillclimb promises to be a thrilling weekend of high-speed competition, bringing together some of the best racers in the country to tackle one of Pennsylvania’s most iconic hillclimbs.
