Got the Nerve? Triathlon prepares to celebrate 20th Anniversary

The Got the Nerve? Triathlon will celebrate its 20th anniversary Saturday, May 18th, 2024, at the picturesque Mt. Gretna Lake and Beach. This milestone event marks two decades of empowering athletes of all abilities to push their limits and embrace the spirit of inclusivity in sport.

The triathlon, which includes swimming, biking, and running, will feature various distances catering to participants of all skill levels, from the super sprint to sprint and Olympic options. Additionally, the event offers alternatives such as the duathlon (run, bike, run) and aquabike (swim, bike), ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Athletes may participate in race events individually or as part of a relay team.

What sets Got the Nerve? Triathlon apart is its unwavering commitment to inclusivity. The event is open to both para/adaptive athletes and able-bodied participants, creating an environment where everyone can compete side by side, breaking down barriers and fostering a sense of camaraderie.

“When I first launched Got the Nerve?, I couldn’t have imagined still being here 20 years later.,” said Chris Kaag, Founder of the IM ABLE Foundation. “It’s been immensely fulfilling to witness the profound impact we’ve had, not just on adaptive athletes, but on everyone involved, including the volunteers who wholeheartedly embraced athletes of all abilities and fostered a truly inclusive and supportive environment for all.”

In addition to celebrating two decades of athleticism and inclusivity, Got the Nerve Triathlon serves a higher purpose by benefiting the Wyomissing based IM ABLE Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to include people living with physical, cognitive, and/or behavioral challenges in the benefits of being physically active. Through grants for adaptive equipment and inclusive programming, IM ABLE Foundation ensures that individuals of all abilities have access to the transformative power of sports and physical activity.

Cindy Davis is a Senior Professor for Harrisburg Area Community College and serves on IM ABLE’s Board of Directors. She is an experienced adaptive triathlete who will be participating in the 20th Annual Got the Nerve? Triathlon on May 18, 2024.

“It’s one of those things where you struggle so hard to find things that are inclusive. And that’s everything – from bathrooms to transportation to races” said Davis. “When you find something that you like to do and there’s avenues to actually do them, you feel like people see you and that you do belong. For me, and I’m sure it’s this way for anyone when they find something they like to do, regardless of their disability, it’s a purpose. It’s seeing how far we can push ourselves.”

Got the Nerve? Triathlon invites athletes, spectators, and volunteers alike to join in the 20th-anniversary celebration on May 18th, 2024, at Mt. Gretna Lake and Beach. Whether you’re a seasoned triathlete or trying out your first multisport race, this event promises a day of excitement, achievement, and the joy of coming together as a community.
