The Pennsylvania State Police have determined that the June 11 fire at the Oak Forest Apartments in Muhlenberg Township was accidental and caused by an electrical event.
According to state police, the Troop L Fire Marshal Unit has completed its investigation into the structure fire that broke out shortly before 9 p.m. on June 11 at the apartment complex, located at 2271 Hampden Blvd.
The fire damaged two apartment buildings, affecting 20 apartment units and displacing more than 30 residents.
Investigators determined the fire originated in the void space above the ceiling of apartment G9 on the second floor. State police said physical evidence and witness interviews supported that conclusion.
The investigation found that the fire was caused by an electrical event. However, investigators said they could not identify the exact electrical failure because of the extensive damage to the building and the collapse of the roof.
According to the investigation, the only potential ignition sources in the ceiling void were electrical wiring and related electrical components.
State police also considered whether severe weather may have played a role. Although thunderstorms with lightning moved through the area before the fire was discovered, investigators determined there was no lightning strike at or near the apartment building.
Based on the evidence collected during the investigation, the Pennsylvania State Police classified the fire as accidental.
