Demolition at 431 Penn Street prompts street closures, traffic changes in Reading

Ongoing demolition at 431 Penn Street will prompt temporary street closures and traffic pattern adjustments starting Monday, April 7, the City of Reading announced in a press release.

Crews are beginning work on the rear section of the building, requiring closures on portions of Court Street and Madison Avenue until further notice. Specifically, Court Street will be closed between 4th and 5th Streets, and Madison Avenue will be closed between the Washington Street parking lot and Court Street.

Local access will still be permitted in certain areas. Court Street will remain accessible from 4th Street to the Madison Building parking lot, as well as from 4th Street to Alvernia University’s rear garage door area, which is just before Madison Avenue.

To accommodate local traffic, both Court Street and Madison Avenue will temporarily operate as two-way streets within the affected sections.

“We thank the community for their continued patience and understanding as this important work continues,” the city stated.
