Moselem Springs Bridge in Richmond Township closed due to structural concerns

The County of Berks has closed the Moselem Springs Bridge in Richmond Township to vehicular traffic after a routine inspection revealed accelerated deterioration of the structure’s steel support beams.

County officials announced Thursday that the bridge, which connects Eagle Road and Moselem Springs Road (Route 662), is closed effective immediately.

According to the county, the bridge was already scheduled for replacement, with construction planned to begin in spring 2027. However, inspectors identified worsening conditions during a routine inspection conducted on May 28, prompting the immediate closure.

Barricades were being installed Thursday, and county officials said a detour route will be posted in the coming days.

The closure affects motorists traveling between Eagle Road and Route 662 in the Richmond Township area. No timeline has been provided for reopening the bridge prior to its planned replacement.

County officials said they are committed to advancing the bridge replacement project as quickly as possible.

“The County of Berks is committed to progressing the design phase and initiating bridge replacement as quickly as possible,” the county said in a statement.

Motorists are encouraged to follow posted detours and seek alternate routes while the bridge remains closed.
