The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that a pavement preservation project on Route 222 in Lancaster County is scheduled to begin Sunday, April 6. The project limits are from the Mohler Church Road overpass in Ephrata Township to Col. Howard Boulevard at the Denver/PA Turnpike Exit in East Cocalico Township.
This project also includes constructing a new entrance to the northbound Route 222 weigh station between the Lancaster County line and the Adamstown/Knauers Exit in Brecknock Township, Berks County.
Weather permitting, work will begin Sunday, April 6, on northbound Route 222 at the weigh station entrance. The contractor will install temporary barrier from 8:00 PM Sunday to 6:00 AM Monday to close the northbound shoulder. This long-term restriction will be in place so a new weigh station access road can be constructed. Weigh station work will be conducted during daytime hours behind the barrier.
Milling operations are expected to begin on the Route 222 mainline on Friday, April 18. Mainline Route 222 milling and paving will be performed at night between the hours of 8:00 PM and to 6:00 AM Sunday through Friday nights. There will be short-term lane restrictions during work hours.
Other traffic impacts include closing the shoulder at the PennDOT maintenance stockpile just north of the Ephrata Exit on northbound Route 222 and some weekend closures to perform bridge work. Updated press releases will be issued prior to the implementation of any major traffic restrictions related to this project.
Work includes bituminous resurfacing, full width milling, base repair, concrete patching, guide rail updates, line painting, and sign updates on Route 222 and constructing the new access road to the weigh station.
New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co., Inc., of New Enterprise, PA, is the contractor on this $7,662,625 project. All work is expected to be completed by February 2, 2026.
