Update – 5/8/2025: Reading Area Water Authority has announced that the Boil Water Advisory for the 18th Ward section of Reading and Kenhorst has been lifted, all samples have been deem safe for consumption.
Original post: A major 16-inch water main break at the intersection of Lancaster Avenue and New Holland Road in Reading disrupted water service for several thousand customers Monday and led to an early dismissal at Millmont Elementary School. Watch the livestream here.
The break, reported earlier in the day, took several hours to fully shut down due to its size and location. The affected area includes the 700 block of Lancaster Avenue, the City of Reading’s 18th Ward, and portions of Kenhorst Borough.
Crews with the Reading Area Water Authority (RAWA) have now begun repairs. Significant traffic disruptions are expected in the area throughout the day, and motorists are urged to avoid the intersection if possible.
Due to the loss of positive pressure in the system, RAWA has issued a boil water notice for customers who experienced a complete water shutdown. Residents are advised to boil water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or food preparation. Bottled water may also be used.
The boil water advisory was issued in accordance with state guidelines, which require notification when conditions could allow contaminants to enter the water system. While not all customers lost water entirely, those in affected areas may have experienced low pressure or service interruptions.
Millmont Elementary School was dismissed early due to the water service issues, though that decision was made independently of RAWA.
RAWA is continuing repairs and will issue a second notice once water testing confirms that service is safe to resume without boiling. Customers with questions can contact RAWA at 610-406-6300.
