Extreme Heat Watch issued for Berks County as heat index could reach 108 degrees

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for Berks County and surrounding areas, warning that dangerously hot conditions are possible from Wednesday afternoon through Saturday evening, with the most intense heat expected Thursday and Friday.

Forecasters say daytime heat index values could climb as high as 108 degrees, creating conditions that significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

The watch includes Berks, Lehigh, Northampton, Upper Bucks, Western Chester and Western Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania, as well as several counties in northwestern New Jersey.

In addition to the daytime heat, overnight temperatures are expected to remain unusually warm, with lows only falling into the low to mid-70s. The National Weather Service said the lack of overnight cooling, combined with multiple days of near record-breaking temperatures, will increase the impacts of the prolonged heat.

Officials urge residents to take precautions by drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned buildings when possible, limiting time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, and checking on relatives, neighbors and others who may be vulnerable to extreme heat.

The National Weather Service also reminds the public to never leave children or pets unattended inside a vehicle, noting that interior temperatures can become lethal within minutes.

An Extreme Heat Watch means conditions are favorable for dangerously hot weather. The National Weather Service encourages residents to monitor the latest forecasts in the coming days, as the watch could be upgraded to an Extreme Heat Warning if confidence in the forecast increases.
