Flood Warning issued for Schuylkill River for Reading and Berks

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey, has issued a Flood Warning for the Schuylkill River in both Reading and Berks County until Thursday evening. At 9:31pm Wednesday, the stage was 8.8 feet. Flood stage is 15.5 feet.

Moderate flooding is forecast. The river is expected to rise above flood stage late Wednesday to a crest of 18.3 feet tomorrow morning. It will then fall below flood stage early tomorrow afternoon.

City of Reading: For reference. At 15.5 feet, Flooding begins in Reading. Portions of
Water and Canal Streets are flooded. At 16.0 feet, Flooding occurs along portions of Franklin, Grape and Chestnut Streets in Reading. At 18.0 feet, Additional streets in Reading are closed. West Reading begins to experience street flooding. The Reading
Conrail tracks are also flooded. Flood History: This crest compares to a previous crest of 17.5 feet on 04/16/1983.

Berks County: For reference. At 10.0 feet, open adjacent land begins to flood between Shoemakersville and Hamburg. At 12.0 feet, Miller Street in Shoemakersville floods. At 14.0 feet, Mohrsville Road in Perry Township floods. At 15.0 feet, Main Street in Shoemakersville floods. At 16.0 feet, Several residences and businesses in Shoemakersville are inundated. Flood History: This crest compares to a previous crest of 15.5 feet on 09/08/2011.

Turn around…don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
