Berks County residents are being urged to take precautions as hot and humid conditions are expected to push heat index values to around 100 degrees through the end of the workweek.
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Berks County beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday and continuing until 8 p.m. Friday. The advisory covers much of eastern Pennsylvania, including Berks County.
While actual air temperatures may be lower, the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel as hot as 100 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Forecasters encourage residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned buildings when possible, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and check on relatives, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
Anyone who must spend time outdoors should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours when temperatures are lower.
Workers who perform outdoor jobs are advised to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
The National Weather Service also reminds residents to recognize the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone showing signs of heat stroke should be moved to a cool, shaded location immediately, and 911 should be called, as heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency.
