NWS issues heat warnings for Berks County as extreme temperatures expected

The National Weather Service has issued two weather advisories for New Jersey and Pennsylvania, warning residents of extreme heat conditions over the next few days.

An Excessive Heat Warning is currently in effect until 6:00 AM Wednesday. During this period, dangerously hot conditions are expected, with heat index values ranging from 101 to 106 degrees. Following this, an Excessive Heat Watch has been issued, effective from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening, with anticipated heat index values between 100 to 104 degrees.

The affected areas include Hunterdon County in New Jersey and Berks, Lehigh, Northampton, Upper Bucks, Western Chester, and Western Montgomery Counties in Pennsylvania.

Extreme heat and high humidity significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. The NWS advises the public to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and to remain in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible. It is also important to avoid direct sunlight and to regularly check on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly and those without air conditioning.

Additionally, the NWS warns against leaving young children and pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. When outdoors, individuals should take extra precautions, such as wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and limiting strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. It is crucial to recognize and act upon symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments during outdoor work. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location immediately. In cases of heat stroke, it is essential to call 911, as it is a medical emergency.
