The Borough of Wyomissing celebrated the completion of renovations to the Berkshire Heights Playground with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, marking the reopening of the neighborhood recreation space following improvements focused on safety and accessibility.
The ceremony was held Aug. 7 at the playground, located at 701 North 7th Street within the Berkshire Heights Little League Complex.
For more than 25 years, the playground served generations of children, Little League families and neighborhood residents. Borough officials said the former playground had reached the end of its useful life, with aging equipment showing significant wear, several features no longer meeting current safety standards and a play area that was not accessible to children and families requiring ADA accommodations.
The renovation replaced the outdated facility with a safer and more accessible playground designed to continue serving neighborhood families.
“This project is about much more than new playground equipment,” said Rick Weinhoffer, Wyomissing Borough councilman. “Berkshire Heights deserved this investment, and August 7 will be a day for the entire neighborhood to celebrate.”
Borough officials said the playground is an important resource for the Berkshire Heights neighborhood because the area is surrounded by major roadways and commercial, industrial and office development, making it difficult for children to safely walk or ride bicycles to other parks and playgrounds.
The playground is also part of the Berkshire Heights Little League Complex, which welcomes hundreds of young athletes, families and visiting teams each year.
Funding for the renovation was supported by Pennsylvania’s Act 13 Marcellus Legacy Fund through the Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program, awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority.
The ceremony included remarks from borough officials, recognition of Wyomissing Public Works employees and project partners involved in completing the renovation, and the official ribbon cutting.
The project is part of the borough’s broader efforts to invest in parks and recreation facilities throughout Wyomissing.
