The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. May 14, 2024, Quality Baked Goods, 14030 Kutztown Road, Fleetwood, PA: Food dispensing utensil in wheat germ and cracked wheat bulk bins was observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Corrected. The can opener, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch.

May 14, 2024, Lukoil, 315 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA: The handwash sink in the dish area was blocked by several cans of beverages and not accessible at all times for employee use. Corrected. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the dish area. Corrected.

May 14, 2024, Lower Alsace Beneficial Association, 1206 Roosevelt, Reading, PA: No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the dish area to remind food employees to wash their hands.

May 14, 2024, Kirbyville Farm Market, 14030 Kutztown Road, Fleetwood, PA: Spoons in several spice containers were observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Corrected. Observed employee food lunch boxes stored on the same shelf and above foods for sale. Store employee food on the bottom shelf and separate from foods for sale. Fan guards and the wall in the walk-in cooler were observed with an accumulation of dust and debris. Observed single-service, single-use articles stored in the dry storage area directly on the floor, and not 6 inches above the floor.

May 16, 2024, Mario’s Pizza, 159 Reading Ave, Boyertown, PA: Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the Bain Marie, is not being date marked. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired and is no longer valid.

May 16, 2024, Mamas Famous Pizza – Exeter, 35 W 47th Street, Exeter Township, PA: Condenser fan covers in the walk-in cooler have a heavy accumulation of dust/dirt.

May 16, 2024, Dundore & Heister Meats, 1333 Penn Ave, Wyomissing, PA: Some prepackaged food items (2 soups and chicken dip) are not labeled to clearly indicate any “Big 9” allergen ingredients and / or the allergen warning statement. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink. Chlorine chemical sanitizer residual detected in the final sanitizer rinse cycle of the low temperature sanitizing dishwasher was 0 ppm, and not 50-100 ppm as required. Facility will be sanitizing all equipment in the 3-compartment sink until the dishwasher is sanitizing properly.

May 17, 2024, Turkey Hill Minit Market #059, 50 W Kutztown, PA: Two Turkey Hill nonfat milk 16 oz. bottles with a sell by date of 5/06/24, and Two Turkey Hill chocolate milk 16 oz. bottles were observed in the customer facing cooler for sale. Corrected.

May 17, 2024, Oley Inn on Main, 401 Main Street, Oley, PA: An open employee’s beverage container was observed in the kitchen food preparation area. Corrected. Facility does not have a method to verify the final rinse temperature for the hot water sanitizing dishwasher.

May 17, 2024, Liberty Fire Company, 21 Henry Ave, New Berlinville, PA: Observed sausage and potato and lobster bisque was being brought to 165 degrees in a food warmer and was not being brought to the proper temperature by heating the soups prior putting them in the food warmer.

May 17, 2024, Keystone Steam Fire Engine Co #1, 240 N Walnut Street, Boyertown, PA: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration.

May 17, 2024, Kathryn’s Katering, 8380 Allentown Pike, Blandon, PA: Food contact surface of a rubber spatula was not smooth, easily cleanable and/or resistant to pitting, cracking or scratching. Corrected.

May 18, 2024, Sunoco Mini Mart, 4601 North 5th Street Highway, Reading, PA: Hot dogs on roller were held at 115.1°F, rather than 135°F or above as required. Corrected on inspection. Time in lieu of temperature being used in the food facility to control ready to eat potentially hazardous foods without written procedures or documentation to verify disposition of food. Thermometers for ensuring proper temperatures of food are not available or readily accessible.

May 18, 2024, Foltz’s, 2934 N 5th Street, Reading, PA: Multiple food dispensing utensils in bulk bin foods observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food. Corrected on inspection. Can opener stored in utility drawer and should be stored with other food utensils. Corrected on inspection. Small storage containers (Rubbermaid) have torn lid/broken container. Hot pads are frayed/worn.

May 19, 2024, Olucuilta at Willow Glenn, 94 Park Ave, Reading, PA: Large containers of food for use on the grill were set up on a table without ice around container. Corrected. Temporary hand wash station was not properly set up at the time of this inspection. Corrected.

The cold prep refrigeration unit cannot be used until an ambient air temperature of 41 degrees F or below is maintained. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Cold prep refrigeration unit along the cooking line is not functioning properly. Ambient air temperature observed at 62 degrees F at the time of inspection. Discontinue use of this unit until an ambient air temperature of 41 degrees F or below is maintained. Observed cardboard being utilized as a floor covering.

May 202, 2024, Heidelberg Family Restaurant, 910 W Penn Ave, Robesonia, PA: Thermometers for ensuring proper temperatures of food not observed in a cold prep refrigeration unit. *PIC provided a thermometer during inspection. Container of chocolate icing observed with an accumulation of food residue on the outer surfaces of the container. *PIC removed container from shelving to be cleaned.

May 20, 2024, Boyer’s Food Market, #3596, 200 W First Street Site 3, Boyertown, PA: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink in the deli department. Condenser fan covers in the meat department have an accumulation of dust/dirt. The handwash sink in the produce department was blocked by a large box and the one in the meat department was blocked by rags, so the sinks were not accessible at all times for employee use. Corrected. Back entrance door located near the mop sink has a gap at the bottom corner due to a deteriorated seal and does not protect against the entry of pests.

May 21, 2024, Little Nicky’s Pizza, 31 Douglassville Shopping Center, Douglassville, PA: Observed a build-up of old food residue on the nonfood contact surfaces of the soda dispenser. Corrected. Observed clean 2 fryer backets stored under the 3-bay sink area directly on the floor, and not 6 inches above the floor. Corrected. Observed a build-up of dust on the ceiling vents above pizza boxes.

May 21, 2024, Douglassville Cafe, 1554 D Ben Franklin HWY Douglassville, PA: The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view.

May 22, 2024, Domino’s Pizza, 909 Heritage Drive Elverson, PA: Food dispensing utensil in the bulk food bin observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Corrected. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Corrected.
