Update – 9/9/25: Cumru Township Police now say that forensic evidence indicates the woman found dead inside the Scenic Drive residence Wednesday morning died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators had initially taken her adult grandson in for questioning, but as the interview continued and evidence was reviewed, police determined that forensics clarified what actually happened, and he was later released. Original post: Cumru Township Police are investigating a fatal shooting that left a grandmother dead and her grandson in custody Wednesday morning in the 800 block of Scenic Drive.
Police said officers were dispatched around 10:25 a.m. for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they spoke with a resident outside the home before hearing additional gunfire. The officers moved themselves and the resident to safety and called for backup.
Officers and detectives established a perimeter and attempted to reach anyone inside the residence by phone and loudspeaker but received no response. The Berks County Emergency Response Team (BCERT) was then called to the scene.
As BCERT prepared to enter, an adult male came out of the house with his hands raised and was taken into custody. When officers entered the residence, they found a deceased female inside. No other people were located.
Berks County District Attorney John Adams confirmed the victim was a grandmother and that her grandson is the suspected shooter. He remains in custody while the investigation continues.
The Berks County District Attorney’s Forensic Unit assisted Cumru Police with evidence processing. Authorities said no additional information is being released at this time.
