Berks County police to increase DUI and seat belt enforcement through Memorial Day weekend

Police departments across Berks County will conduct seat belt enforcement and impaired driving patrols throughout the Memorial Day holiday weekend as part of Pennsylvania’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

According to a release from the North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program, officers will carry out seat belt checks, roving patrols, and sobriety checkpoints on roadways across the county through June 7. The enforcement effort is aimed at reducing crashes and fatalities involving impaired or unbelted drivers during nighttime hours.

Authorities said the Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the summer travel season and often coincides with college and high school graduation celebrations, leading to increased gatherings where alcohol may be involved.

“The message is simple, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” officials stated in the release, reminding drivers to arrange for a designated driver if they plan to consume alcohol.

Police also urged motorists to wear seat belts at all times, emphasizing the campaign slogan, “Click It or Ticket.”

The North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program coordinates DUI enforcement efforts for municipal police departments in Berks and several other Pennsylvania counties, including Schuylkill, Monroe, Pike, Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, and Union counties.

Sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols are funded through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
