The Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) is proud to announce Mr. Scott L. Gruber as the recipient of the 2026 BCIU Outstanding Community Partner Award. Presented annually, the award recognizes an external partner whose leadership, advocacy, and collaboration have helped advance the BCIU’s mission and made a meaningful difference for the students, families, educators, and communities it serves. Mr. Gruber was formally recognized by the BCIU Board of Directors during its September 17, 2026, Board Meeting, where Board members and BCIU Administration acknowledged his outstanding contributions and longstanding commitment to the children, families, schools, and communities of Berks County.
The Outstanding Community Partner Award honors individuals who are external partners with a demonstrated commitment to education and community well-being; have an understanding of the importance and role of the BCIU; advocate for the BCIU and the individuals and communities it serves; share time, resources, and expertise through meaningful collaboration in support of the BCIU’s mission; and are respected leaders in their field and valued members of the Berks County community.
Throughout a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, Mr. Gruber has provided exceptional leadership in business, philanthropy, education, and community development. As former President and Chief Executive Officer of Tompkins VIST Bank, and through his continued involvement with numerous community organizations, he has championed initiatives that improve the quality of life for individuals and families throughout Berks County.
Mr. Gruber has been a valued partner of the BCIU through his work with Our City Reading, Inc., where he has helped to bring together business, philanthropic, community, and educational organizations in support of shared goals. His leadership and support have contributed to initiatives that benefit children and families across the region. Among his many contributions, he played an important role in advancing the vision and development of the BCIU Learning Center at the Helping Harvest Annex, helping unite partners and resources to expand access to high-quality early childhood education and family-centered services.
Mr. Gruber has also been instrumental in the development and launch of the BCIU Education Foundation. As a Founding Trustee and recently elected Chair of the Foundation Board, he has helped advance a vision focused on expanding opportunities in early childhood education and increasing access to resources that support children, families, and communities throughout Berks County. His commitment to the Foundation’s mission, Building Futures | Enriching Lives, reflects his belief in the transformative impact of investing in young children and creating strong foundations for future success.
