22-year-old injured in shooting after argument in Northwest Reading park, police say

A 22-year-old was injured in a shooting following an argument that took place Monday evening at Barbey’s Playground in Northwest Reading, according to the Reading Police Department Criminal Investigations Division.

On April 8th, 2024 at approximately 6:10 pm officers responded to the area of Schuylkill Ave & West Elm Street for the report of a shooting in the park.

Shortly after arriving on-scene, officers located a 22-year male who sustained a gunshot wound to the arm in the 300 block of McKnight Street. The victim was transported to Reading Hospital for treatment of his injury.

Police say the shooting is believed to be the result of an argument that took place in the park. The area of the basketball court was closed for about an hour while police collected evidence from the scene. Police also said that there is no suspect information at this time.

Additionally, police said an unrelated shooting incident occurred overnight where a man accidentally shot himself. Injuries sustained are reported to be non-life-threatening. No additional information was provided on the incident.
