Reading Police Arrest Driver Involved in Hit & Run on South 18th Street

The Reading Police Department has released new details related to the Hit & Run involving two pedestrians that occurred at the intersection of South 18th St and Perkiomen Ave on April 6, 2021.

Police received a 911 call reporting two children struck by a motorcycle that then fled the scene on South 18th and Perkiomen Avenue. The children, 8 and 14 year old were transported to Reading Hospital and Hershey Medical Center to treat their injuries following the incident.

During the investigation, Police determined that an unidentified male riding a white three-wheel motorcycle was traveling West on Perkiomen Ave and struck the two juveniles while crossing the street at South 18th St using the crosswalk.

Following an investigation, the rider has been identified as Maximo Serrano-García, 75 of Reading. Police have also located the motorcycle involved.

Serrano-García was charged with: Accidents Involving Death or Serious Injury, Accidents Involving Death or Serious Injury while Not Properly Licensed, Duty to Provide Aid, Violation of Class of License, and Violation of Driving at a Safe Speed.

Investigators say Serrano-García was taken into custody on April 8th without incident.

“I want to thank Police Chief Richard Tornielli and the rest of the Police Department for their excellent work investigating and promptly identifying and charging the suspect,” said Mayor Eddie Morán. “As I allow the justice system to run its course, I will continue praying for the children’s quick recovery, and for peace and healing for their family.”
