Reading man arrested, $88K worth of drugs seized by police

$88,000 worth of drugs and paraphernalia was seized in Reading Thursday. Angel Manuel Torres-Hernandez of Reading has been charged with possession with the intent to deliver Cocaine, among other changes.

In May of 2022, the Berks County District Attorney’s Drug Task Force initiated an investigation into Angel Manuel Torres-Hernandez for selling cocaine within the City of Reading. During the investigation, investigators say undercover detectives purchased cocaine from Torres-Hernandez several times. The detectives determined that Torres-Hernandez was selling his illegal product on the streets of Reading and storing them inside of his residence in the 1100 of North 9th Street.

On Thursday, June 30, 2022, at approximately 1:50pm, detectives took Angel Manuel Torres-Hernandez into custody for delivery of cocaine outside of his residence without incident.

At the time of his arrest, Police say Torres-Hernandez was in possession of a packet of cocaine. A search warrant was issued by Magisterial District Judge Tonya Butler for Torres-Hernandez’s residence and was subsequently executed by District Attorney Drug Task force members, and the Reading Police Vice Unit.

As a result, the following items were seized: Bulk pressed cocaine weighing approximately 742 grams. Approximately one hundred thirty-nine individually packaged gram sized bags of cocaine. One bag containing approximately 1.5 grams of Fentanyl. Approximately $5338 in US currency believed to be the proceeds from illegal drug sales. One cocaine press. Drug ledger – records of sales. Two digital scales. Drug paraphernalia including packaging material and drug cutting agent. A stock of ammunition. Miscellaneous documents and identifications. One cellular phone and apartment keys from the defendant’s persons. One “Hide-A-Can” containing approximately five grams of cocaine.

Investigators say the total street value of the illegal drugs was estimated to be more than $88,000.

The defendant, Angel Manuel Torres-Hernandez, was transported to the Berks County Sheriff’s Department Central Processing Center where he was charged with Delivery of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine), Possession with the Intent to Deliver (Cocaine), Possession of a Controlled Substances (Cocaine & Fentanyl), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Tonya Butler. Bail was set at $75,000.

Detectives say the investigation is ongoing.

As in every criminal case, the fact that an arrest occurred or a complaint has been filed is merely an accusation, and the defendant, Angel Manuel Torres-Hernandez, is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
