Alvernia University has been awarded a $16,200 state grant to support an aeroponics greenhouse project, state Rep. Manuel Guzman Jr. announced.

“I’m pleased to see Alvernia University receive this funding to support an aeroponics greenhouse project that advances innovative approaches to agriculture,” Guzman said.

Aeroponics is a method of growing plants without soil, with roots suspended and supplied with nutrients through a mist or similar system.

The Alvernia project is among 97 projects receiving a combined $9.7 million through the latest round of the state program. According to the announcement, projects funded statewide include efforts focused on agricultural technology, soil and water conservation and clean energy solutions.

“It is encouraging to see the Agricultural Innovation Grant Program making a difference in our community,” Guzman said. “Agriculture is an important part of Pennsylvania’s economy, and I appreciate the Department of Agriculture and the Shapiro administration for their continued investment in the industry and their efforts to strengthen agriculture while protecting our natural resources.”

The state is preparing to open a third round of Agricultural Innovation Grants on Sept. 1. The 2026-27 state budget provides $10 million for the next round of funding.
