Berks County middle school students are getting a unique chance to explore the world of manufacturing through the “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing” (WSCM) video contest. Now in its ninth year, the contest is designed by the Manufacturers Resource Center (MRC) to introduce young minds to the variety of career paths available in the manufacturing sector.
This year, thirty middle schools from Berks and Schuylkill counties have teamed up with local manufacturers, bringing a hands-on perspective to the next generation. Each team of 7th and 8th graders will work with a partnering manufacturer to capture the essence of the industry in a short video. As they produce, edit, and share their findings, students are encouraged to dive into the creativity and innovation that define modern manufacturing.
“MRC is proud to bring What’s So Cool About Manufacturing to the Berks and Schuylkill area for its 9th year,” said Rich Hobbs, MRC President & CEO. “The program’s continued success and impact can be attributed to the efforts the teachers and students have put forth, along with the many partners and community sponsors committed to building a future workforce which will in turn support economic growth and expansion in the region.”
From Reading Truck and Carpenter Technology to Sweet Street Desserts and Penske Racing Shocks, each manufacturer is prepared to showcase the dynamic and innovative world that awaits these young learners. The videos will debut on the WSCM website, WhatsSoCool.org, where viewers can vote on March 19, 2025, to select the fan-favorite. The excitement will culminate in the Berks Schuylkill Awards Event on April 1, 2025, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading.
Karen Buck, Director of Workforce Initiatives for MRC, expressed enthusiasm about this year’s contest, saying, “We are thrilled to kick off year nine of the WSCM program in Berks and Schuylkill. The potential for careers in manufacturing are demonstrated first-hand by the manufacturers, and the students get excited about the possibility of working in a cool, modern environment that they may never have imagined.”
By fostering a strong connection between students and local industry, the contest aims to cultivate interest in STEM and CTE (Career and Technical Education) fields early in students’ educational journeys. As they approach high school, the experience will equip them with insights into the hands-on, technology-driven environments that manufacturers in Berks County are proud to offer.
