Music duo “Ancient Voices” to perform at Bern Church

Native American Music with a Contemporary Twist

Award-winning music duo Ancient Voices will appear in concert on Wednesday, October 12 at 6:30pm at the Bern Reformed United Church of Christ.

Their program is preceeded by Turtle Moon Native American Flute Circle playing improvised “Heartsong” melodies. The musical duo of David Rose (Native American flute) and Dan Kennedy (Piano) will be celebrating their two nominations in this year’s Native American Music Awards, the GRAMMYS of Native American music. Says Rose, “A nomination at this level is a kind of an award to us in and of itself.”

Of Mexican/Indian/Irish and Native American heritage (Choctaw/Cherokee), David Rose, is well known on the festival and flute circle scene across the country. A 9-year United States Army and Navy veteran and life-long musician with technical skills, his musical message tells us “it is important to find your own voice as a musician.” David’s own compositions have been featured on Mars Lasar’s “Tahoe Spirit” CD, MSNBC’s documentary “100 Heartbeats,” with Painted Raven, and on Spirit Wind Records. “Wind Dance Under The Moon” ranked #1 on the One World chart.

Whisperings Piano Internet artist, Dan Kennedy, has performed in 21 states across the U.S. and Canada. Having worked with luminaries Will Ackerman, Joe Bongiorno, Charles Neville, Wings drummer Steve Holley, Glen Velez, and T-Bone Wolk, his solo piano work has been heard on over 250 radio stations, including “Echoes” nightly music soundscape, and streamed via internet over 488,000 times.

With five CD releases he ranks high on Top 100 Charts, and was awarded the Enlightened Piano Radio 2019 Album of the Year. Kennedy, formally trained at Oberlin and New England Conservatory, overlays his compositions with sparkling melodies and flashes of unexpected impovisation. Dan reveals, “the music is not about me, it’s about my vulnerability and imperfections and the audience feeling deeply connected to what is happening.”

Together, as Ancient Voices, David Rose and Dan Kennedy have been making music since 2016.

Kennedy says “David’s sound just fit, and I knew we had much more music to make together.” The musical duo has performed in PA, CT, MA, NH, and ME with VT on the way. The Ancient Voices debut album, “Under Open Sky,” is “a scintillating blend of faraway panoramic musical imagery with more contemporary, upbeat numbers.” You can sample the songs “Desert Snow” and “Autumn Lament” at www.ancientvoices.us.

Providing community events, educational programs, free introductary lessons, and crafting workshops, the Turtle Moon Native American Flute Circle is a member of The World Flute Society, and meets for their monthly flute circle, first Sundays at 1-4pm, in the Social Hall of the Historic Bern Church near Blue Marsh Lake.
