A day-long festival will honor community mothers and also nod to Cinco De Mayo next week.
Mi Tierra Materna (“My Motherland” in Spanish) invites families to an outdoor celebration that will bring together live music, authentic Mexican food, and vibrant culture to honor the strongest pillars in our community – moms.
Mi Tierra Materna will take place on Saturday, May 10, from 1pm to 7pm at 535 Canal Street in Reading. The event is a project of the American-Mexican Organización de Resiliencia, or AMOR; which aims to support and highlight the accomplishments and contributions of Reading’s Mexican community. The most important contributions start in the home, according to AMOR organizer Yuritzkiri Sixtos-Medina.
“This day is to thank moms for everything they do for their families, for their friends, and for so many other people,” Sixtos-Medina said. “Mothers build the characters of their children, their love and wisdom guides entire generations and we want to recognize that.”
Sixtos-Medina is also the instructor for Grupo Uarhani, a Reading-based Mexican folkloric dance troupe. Grupo Uarhani will be performing at the event alongside a number of other performers and live musicians. Aside from entertainment, the festivity will also offer free gifts for mom’s, food vendors, and a recognition of the history and culture of Mexico.
“Cinco de Mayo is a few days before this and we know people celebrate,” said Ivan Corona, an AMOR organizer. “We just wanted to do something different from just partying and give flowers to the people we really care about.”
