The Salvation Army of Reading has kicked off its in-person Red Kettle Fundraising Season to help “Rescue Christmas” for thousands of community residents who are hurting financially due to the impacts of COVID-19.

To mark the occasion, the Salvation Army distribute 950 food boxes and turkeys Tuesday to hundreds of families in need so they can have a nutritious Thanksgiving meal this week.

The funds raised through the iconic red kettles are at risk this year due to the pandemic, the national coin shortage, and more people shopping online instead of in person.

Volunteers from Tower Health put together Thanksgiving meal boxes for Reading families.

Donations are needed because requests for services are at an all-time high for things like Christmas assistance, food, and shelter.

Ordinarily, The Salvation Army begins its in-person Red Kettle Fundraising Campaign on the day after Thanksgiving when scores of shoppers look for Black Friday sales.

This year, area businesses are allowing The Salvation Army to set up kettles early due to the pressing community needs.

Last year, The Salvation Army of Reading raised $100,000 during the campaign. This year, the goal is to raise $150,000.
