The Youth Advisory Board of Berks County Community Foundation and Youth Volunteer Corps of Reading is conducting a donation drive to support healthcare workers at local hospitals.
The Youth Advisory Board members are collecting non-perishable snacks, Keurig cups, herbal tea, cards and disposable cups to donate to the staff in Berks County’s busy emergency rooms.
Donations will be collected in the parking lot of the McDonald’s on Hill Road and Penn Avenue on Sunday, December 6 from 3-4 pm.
“I think this project is important because healthcare workers have really been the unsung heroes throughout these chaotic times. They deserve so much for everything they have done to help those who are ill” said Harry Weiss, 17, a Youth Advisory Board member.
”They work long hours and put themselves and their families at risk just by going to work each day. It’s important for us to show our gratitude for their tremendous sacrifices and I’m grateful for the opportunity to help support them.”
The Youth Advisory Board consists of 30 high school students from 13 different school districts across Berks County. Members are passionate about community service and are dedicated to learning about the issues that Berks County faces.
The Board meets twice monthly to learn about and take action on a variety of issues. This fall, the Board recognized the impact of the pandemic in so many different aspects of our community that they decided to take action to support those who have been on the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19.
“Through our discussions about community issues in Berks County, our Youth Advisory Board expressed concern over the effects of the pandemic on each and every member of our community” said Rachel Kuhn, Youth Advisory Board Director.
“To that end, this group of students has enthusiastically embraced this collection drive and are committed to showing their support for our healthcare workers.”
VOiCEup Berks, a fund of Berks County Community Foundation and an affiliate of Youth Volunteer Corps, is a local organization dedicated to connecting all sectors of Berks County to volunteer opportunities through service learning.
