PA Liquor Control Board awards grants in Berks to reduce underage and dangerous drinking

In an effort to curb underage and dangerous alcohol consumption, two organizations in Berks County have been awarded funding by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB). These grants are part of the PLCB’s broader 2024-26 Alcohol Education Grant Program, which aims to support schools, community organizations, and law enforcement in their efforts to reduce alcohol misuse across the state.

The Borough of Wyomissing and Kutztown University have collectively received over $67,000 to implement various educational and enforcement initiatives designed to address alcohol-related issues within their communities.

The Borough of Wyomissing has been awarded $22,125, which will be allocated towards enhancing local enforcement patrols, purchasing Portable Breath Testers (PBTs), and conducting community education programs. These initiatives will be supplemented by strategic use of social media and website messaging to reach a broader audience with important information about alcohol laws and safety.

A significant component of Wyomissing’s plan includes participating in the PLCB’s “Understanding the Liquor Laws in Pennsylvania and the Resources Available” training, which will further equip local authorities and community members with the knowledge needed to effectively manage alcohol-related issues.

Kutztown University, known for its proactive approach to student wellness, has been awarded a grant of $45,320. This funding will be used to develop and implement a range of programs focused on alcohol education and prevention among its student body. Key initiatives include the deployment of Alcohol Prevention Educators, hosting events such as the Neon Entertainment Hypnotic Intoxication, and the Collegiate Empowerment Maximize Your Buzz program.

Additionally, the university will engage student leaders and influencers through the PLCB’s Alcohol Awareness training, ensuring that those in key positions are well-informed about the dangers of alcohol misuse. Kutztown University will also participate in the PLCB’s Alcohol Education Conference, further solidifying its commitment to reducing underage and dangerous drinking on campus.

These grants are part of a larger statewide effort by the PLCB, which has awarded over $3.3 million to 86 organizations across Pennsylvania. The funding reflects a strong commitment to addressing the challenges of underage and dangerous drinking, particularly within local communities and educational institutions.
