Reading Launches Emergency Rental Assistance Program to Prevent Homelessness

The City of Reading Human Relations Commission has started an emergency rental assistance program this week to help combat homelessness.

The program is for those currently homeless or at risk of becoming homeless due to COVID-19 related issues. For those who have experienced a loss of income, the program can assist with rent and utility payments.

“Unexpected job loss or income loss leaves many of our residents facing the stress of trying to keep a roof over their family’s head during a pandemic. To be able to assist Reading families is a matter of high priority to my administration,” said Mayor Eddie Moran.

“Although we have designated some funds to jump-start this program, the City is still waiting for CARES Act funding that is intended for homelessness prevention activities.”

Applicants should take note of the following program requirements, which apply under the federal CARES Act Emergency Solutions Grant:

  • Residency requirement of at least 30 days
  • Live within the City of Reading limits
  • Proof of Lease
  • Income eligibility based program – 30% average median income
  • Income verification
  • Identity verification documents
  • Eviction notice ordered by the court with a court date
  • 10 day shut off notice or notice of termination bill with a shut-off date

Applications for this program are now being accepted and those looking to apply can visit readingpa.gov/content/rental-assistance-application. Landlords cannot apply but can call/email to refer a renter.

UPDATE: Gov. Wolf has announced protections from foreclosures and evictions through August 31, 2020.
