Reading Roller Derby (RDG) is closing out their action-packed 2024 season with a final bout against Dirty Jersey Roller Derby on Sunday, November 10th, at Skateaway in Shillington. But it’s not just about the game; this last bout of the season is also a fundraiser for the Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL), with half of the door proceeds going directly to help animals in need.
Fans attending the game will have multiple ways to contribute to the ARL. Attendees who bring items from the Animal Rescue League’s Wish List will get a chance to win a raffle basket, and additional raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the event. In addition, the team is hosting a unique “vote with change” contest, featuring the pets of RDG skaters. Fans can participate by casting their votes through donations, adding an extra layer of fun to the evening’s cause.
“Our roller derby team, Reading Roller Derby, is raising money for the Animal Rescue League because, like us, these animals show resilience, strength, and heart,” said RDG skater Jesi Yost. “By supporting the ARL, we’re helping to give vulnerable animals a second chance at life in a loving home.”
This season has been one of determination and success for Reading Roller Derby, boasting nine games and six wins. The team’s unbreakable spirit and commitment have been on full display, and they’re especially excited to face off against Dirty Jersey Roller Derby, a team that previously bested RDG in a scrimmage earlier this year. The upcoming game also marks an important milestone for some of RDG’s newest skaters, who will be making their home game debut after joining through the team’s bootcamp program earlier this year.
Reading Roller Derby, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is known not only for its competitive spirit but also for its dedication to empowering women through sport and supporting the local community. As RDG looks toward their next season, they invite aspiring skaters to join a free “Meet & Skate” event on Tuesday, November 19th at Skateaway, where anyone interested can connect with the team and learn more about the sport. For those eager to take their interest further, RDG’s 2025 Bootcamp for skaters aged 18 and older begins on January 7, 2025.
Doors for the November 10th bout open at 6:30 p.m., with the first whistle blowing at 7:00 p.m. For more details on the event, visit Reading Roller Derby’s Facebook page or their official website.
