Out-of-date milk for sale, slushy machines found with mold: Restaurant Inspections, Feb. 9, 2024

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. During the inspection on January 23, 2024, at Wonderful House Chinese Restaurant located at 4301 Penn Ave in Sinking Spring, PA, several violations were noted. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in warewashing area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). This issue was promptly corrected. Additionally, the rear door located in the kitchen area of the food facility has a gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals.

On January 23, 2024, during the inspection of West Lawn Beverage Company at 2330 Penn Ave in West Lawn, PA, it was noted that non-food contact surfaces were not being cleaned with sufficient frequency to prevent the accumulation of dirt and soil. Specifically, some slushy machines were found to have a buildup of mold and dirt around crevices under the dispenser and spout areas.

On January 23, 2024, New York Bagelry, located at 2720 Penn Ave in West Lawn, PA, underwent inspection, during which several violations were noted. Firstly, cutting boards with deep scores and peeling were observed.. These cutting boards were promptly discarded. Additionally, the ice deflector shield in the kitchen ice maker exhibited a buildup of lime residue, and the customer soda fountain dispensing nozzle and ice chute/splash guard area showed residue accumulation, indicating a need for more frequent cleaning. Furthermore, some air vents in the ceiling areas of the establishment were found to be dusty and requiring cleaning to maintain sanitation standards.

During the inspection conducted on January 24, 2024, at The Other Farm and Forge situated at 128 E Philadelphia Ave in Boyertown, PA, two violations were identified. Firstly, old food residue, dishes, and utensils were found in the handwash sink, suggesting its improper use for purposes other than handwashing. Additionally, there were leaks observed: one at the drain of the handwash sink in the prep kitchen and another in the right side compartment of the 3-bay sink in the washroom.

On January 24, 2024, The Ironstone restaurant, located at 120 E Philadelphia Ave in Boyertown, PA, was inspected. Firstly, hamburger patties were found in the Advantco Freezer stored without covering. Additionally, clean food equipment and utensils were observed stored wet on a stainless steel rack next to the ice machine, hindering proper draining and air drying. Moreover, the hot water handle on the kitchen handwash sink was noted to be loose. Furthermore, old food spillage was observed on the floors of the walk-in cooler and freezer.

On January 24, 2024, Antonio’s Trattoria at 1636 W Philadelphia Ave in Boyertown, PA, underwent inspection, revealing two violations. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the deli baine marie, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Food facility does not employ a certified food employee as required.

On January 25, 2024, during the inspection of Rite Aid #3400 situated at 420 N 3rd St in Womelsdorf, PA, out-of-date milk was found offered for sale in a reach-in cooler. The expired milk was promptly discarded as per regulatory requirements.

During the inspection conducted on January 25, 2024, at Blue Marsh Market located at 118 W 3rd St in Bernville, PA, an employee was observed eating or tasting food in the pizza prep area. The issue was promptly corrected upon observation.

During the inspection conducted on January 25, 2024, at 201 West Food & Spirits situated at 201 W Lancaster Ave in Shillington, PA, multiple violations were identified. First, Observed shelving equipment, in walk in cooler area with rusted shelves and racks above prep table and an accumulation of dirt, food residue, debris on non-food contact surfaces. Also gasket on bar reach in has a dirt build up. Additionally, non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Spilled food under shelves in walk in cooler.

During the inspection on January 28, 2024, at Laureldale Nursing & Rehabilitation located at 2125 Elizabeth Ave in Reading, PA, several violations were noted. Metal food transport carts (tray delivery) are soiled. Ice machine dispensing/chute area soiled. Hot pads heavily soiled – adequate supply should be available for daily or per meal clean rotation. Fan guard in dish room has dust build-up. Observed no chemical sanitizer being used on equipment and utensils after washing and rinsing them, and prior to use. Ceiling vent in dish room – has peeling paint.

During the inspection conducted on January 29, 2024, at Wayback Burgers situated at 1181 Berkshire Blvd in Wyomissing, PA, several violations were identified and addressed promptly. Food employee observed in front area wearing a watch on arm. Corrected. The milk container in the front milkshake area was observed to have dried food residue on the inner surface. Corrected. Observed old food debris/dried splash/dirt on some surfaces throughout the facility – some wall areas, temperature knobs on the hot hold unit at the front counter, and some surfaces of the soda unit. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. A working container (spray bottle) of cleaner was stored hanging on the same shelf with clean food equipment in the back area. Corrected.

During the inspection on January 29, 2024, at Burger King #7166 located at 1197 Berkshire Blvd in Wyomissing, PA, two violations were identified. First, the ice chutes at the customer soda units, considered food contact surfaces, were found to have residue and were not clean to sight and touch, which was promptly corrected. Second, the floors in some areas of the kitchen were noted to have an accumulation of dirt, grease, and/or old food debris.

During the inspection conducted on January 30, 2024, at Penn Werner Hotel located at 5 E Penn Ave in Wernersville, PA, two violations were identified. First, the food facility did not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Second, issues were noted regarding the facility’s infrastructure. The ceiling in the kitchen grill area was observed to have peeling paint, requiring repair, and the flooring in the kitchen consisted of peeled painted cement with a large missing section, necessitating repair to ensure smooth, easy-to-clean, non-porous surfaces.

During the inspection on January 30, 2024, at New Holland Food Mart located at 1660 New Holland Rd in Reading, PA, a violation was identified. Prepackaged sandwiches, a refrigerated ready to eat time/temperature control for safety food, in the reach in case area, was not compliant with datemarking by being labeled with a discard or use by date of no more than 7 days. All sandwiches must be date marked in case, one sandwich package was bulged and discarded.
