The City of Reading has introduced Reading Self-Serve, a new online portal designed to simplify the process of applying for permits, licenses, and other city-related applications. The platform offers 24/7 access, allowing residents, businesses, and contractors to conveniently submit applications, pay invoices, track application statuses, and receive approvals—all from their home or office.
The launch of Reading Self-Serve is part of the city’s ongoing initiative to improve efficiency, enhance accessibility, and modernize public services. The portal supports a variety of applications, including business registrations, construction permits, event permits, and certificates of fitness and appropriateness.
Business owners can use the system to apply for licenses such as contractor business licenses, food and retail business licenses, festival and special event business licenses, amusement and admission licenses, and non-profit or rental business licenses. The portal also handles applications for tattoo business licenses.
For those involved in construction, Reading Self-Serve provides a streamlined process for obtaining commercial and residential building permits, as well as electrical, mechanical, and plumbing permits. Temporary dumpster permits can also be requested through the platform.
Event organizers can use the system to apply for block party permits, special event permits, and community site reservations. Additionally, the platform facilitates applications for certificates of fitness and appropriateness, covering requirements such as fireworks, sprinkler, and suppression certificates, as well as certificates of appropriateness for properties in historic districts.
“Reading Self-Serve is a game-changer for our residents and business owners,” said Mayor Eddie Morán. “By transitioning to an online platform, we are increasing accessibility, improving transparency, and making it easier for everyone to interact with the City of Reading’s services.”
The portal is now live and accessible at Reading Self-Serve. Residents who need assistance navigating the platform can contact the Citizens Service Center at 1-877-727-3234 or visit City Hall, 815 Washington Street, Reading, PA 19601.
