Exeter Police Join Campaign to Stop Aggressive Driving with Enforcement on 422

Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading factors of highway crashes and fatalities in Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. However, they say many motorists don’t realize they are aggressive drivers.

In a campaign of enforcement and education, Exeter Township Police Department conducted an aggressive driving enforcement detail Wednesday morning on 422 in Exeter Township near Perkiomen Ave. The coordinated enforcement day was a part of a statewide wave that runs through late August.

Police were on the look out for motorists exhibiting aggressive driving behaviors, such as speeding, red light running, tailgating, and commercial truck violations.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines aggressive-driving crashes as those with at least two identified aggressive-driving behaviors included in the crash.

If you encounter an aggressive driver, PennDOT offers these tips for what to do:

Get out of their way and don’t challenge them. Stay relaxed, avoid eye contact and ignore rude gestures. Don’t block the passing lane if you are driving slower than most of the traffic. Do not attempt to follow or pursue the vehicle. You or a passenger may call the police. But, if you use a cell phone, pull over to a safe location.

While many people associate aggressive driving with road rage, they are two different behaviors. Road rage, which is a criminal offense, is often the result of aggressive driving behavior that escalates into an assault with a vehicle or other dangerous weapon.

In the past 10 years, the highest number of speed-related crashes statewide occurred in 2013, with 33,753. Speeding related crashes have increased between 2017 (31,0009) and 2018 (32,634). Speed related fatalities have decreased 11.1% from 440 in 2017 to 391 in 2018.
