Sai Hamburg, LLC, a business in Hamburg, has been awarded nearly $1 million in federal funding to install a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recently announced that the company will receive $945,555 as part of the latest round of National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) funding.
The charging station will be located at Square One Markets, near Exit 29 on I-78, a prime location that will serve both local residents and travelers passing through the region. This investment is part of a broader $7.1 million initiative by the Shapiro Administration to enhance EV infrastructure across the state.
This funding is one of ten projects selected in nine counties across Pennsylvania, all aimed at filling the remaining gaps in the state’s Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). The goal of theses projects is to ensure that there are no more than 50 miles between charging stations along regional corridors, providing reliable access for electric vehicle drivers.
“With every investment in EV infrastructure, we make clean transportation options more accessible for Pennsylvanians,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “These awards will help move us to the next phase of EV rollout.”
This funding supports Pennsylvania’s ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote cleaner transportation options. It also underscores the state’s commitment to boosting local economies, as the project requires that at least 50% of the labor be performed by workers residing within 50 miles of the site.
Pennsylvania is making strides in EV infrastructure, with over 1,800 miles of designated AFCs now supported by NEVI-funded chargers. The new charging station in Hamburg will help close the remaining gaps in these corridors, bringing the state closer to achieving “fully built out” certification.
Supported by the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the project will not only provide necessary infrastructure for the growing number of electric vehicles but also stimulate local job creation. The NEVI program requires a minimum 20% match from the recipients, ensuring a collaborative investment in the future of clean transportation.
