Large bins of cheese stored directly on floor of walk-in cooler: Restaurant Inspections, Apr. 4, 2024

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On March 21, 2024, an inspection took place at Waterman Meat Market situated at 97 Springhill Rd, Hereford, PA 18056. During the inspection, two violations were identified. Food employee was observed in the deli area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, or hats. Corrected. A food employee was observed touching Deli meat, a ready to eat food – with bare hands. Corrected. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips for the dish machine or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration.

On March 21, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Tommy’s Italian Pizzeria & Restaurant located at 3674 Pricetown Rd, Fleetwood, PA 19522. Two violations were noted during the inspection. Cup without a handle observed in container of spice. Corrected.

On March 21, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Marisol’s Bakery & Cafe located at 2903 Pricetown Rd, Temple, PA 19560. Several violations were identified. The restaurant was listed as out of compliance. The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Beef was held at 125 °F, chicken was held at 114 °F in the front counter area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Observed cold holding equipment, in cookline area, with an accumulation of encrusted food residue, and debris on non-food contact surfaces. The handwash sink for employees located in the dish area, is not convenient and easily accessible, as evidenced by the observed lack of proper handwashing by employees. Corrected. Spray bottle with yellow liquid at the front counter area, that was taken from bulk supplies, was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On March 21, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Jukebox Cafe located at 535 S Reading Ave, Boyertown, PA 19512 for a change in ownership. Prepackaged Cinnamon Buns are not labeled properly with the name of product, ingredient statement, net weight, distributed by statement and/or nutritional facts.

On March 21, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Hamburg Area SD Perry Elementary located at 201 Fourth St, Shoemakersville, PA 19555. Two violations were noted during the inspection. One dented on the seam canned item observed in dry storage area and intended for use or sale in the food facility. Corrected. Working squeeze bottle in dish area, used for storing pink cleaner taken from bulk supplies, was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On March 25, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Ray’s #1 Pizza located at 1665 State Hill Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610. Several violations were noted during the inspection. Condenser fan covers in the walk-in cooler have an accumulation of dust/dirt. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the kitchen area. Corrected. Food facility inspection indicates evidence of rodent activity in front and back areas. Facility is continuing their pest control program.

On March 25, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Mission BBQ Wyomissing located at 1775 Papermill Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610. The inspection revealed the following violations. Food employees observed in cookline area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers. Corrected. Crushed graham crackers in a storage container in the dry storage area, is not labeled with the common name of the food. Corrected. Food contact surface of fryer baskets (2) and one spatula are not smooth, easily cleanable and/or resistant to pitting, cracking or scratching. Corrected. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in clean dish storage area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). Corrected.

On March 25, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Little Italia Pizzeria located at 1665 State Hill Rd, Wyomissing, PA 19610. Several violations were noted during the assessment. Observed large bins of cheese stored directly on the floor in the walk-in cooler, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Corrected. Observed cardboard being used to line the shelves in the walk-in cooler. Metal shelving in the walk-in cooler is becoming rusty. Observed dirt/debris on the floor and shelving in the front and back areas. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the kitchen area. Corrected. Food facility inspection indicates evidence of rodent activity in front and back areas. Facility needs to continue with pest control program.

On March 25, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Latin Taste located at 1665 State Hill Rd Unit 970, Wyomissing, PA 19610. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – observed water leaking at the mop sink faucet. Working container (spray bottle) in kitchen area, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On March 25, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Jersey Mike’s Subs located at 2733 Papermill Rd, Suite X10, Wyomissing, PA 19610. Souffle cup without a handle observed stored in a bulk bin of salt. Corrected. Employees backpack and sweatshirt were observed in dry storage area on top of cases of chips, and not stored in dressing rooms or identified storage area as required. Corrected.

On March 26, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Square One Hamburg located at 71 Industrial Dr, Hamburg, PA 19526. Inspection was for change of ownership. Chocolate milk refrigerated ready to eat time/temperature control for safety food was held beyond the manufacturer’s expiration date in the walk-in cooler self-serve shelf. Corrected.

On March 26, 2024, at Red Robin located at 125 Wilderness Rd, Hamburg, PA 19526. Non-food contact shelves (2) in the expo area were observed with excessive debris accumulation. Corrected.

On March 26, 2024, at Exeter Twp. SD Jr HS located at 151 E 39th St, Reading, PA 19606. Black box fan being used in the dishwashing room has an accumulation of dust.

On March 26, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Dollar General #18310 located at 103 N Monocacy Creek Rd, Douglassville, PA 19518. Severely dented can item observed in the canned food aisle are and intended for use or sale in the food facility. Corrected.

On March 26, 2024, an inspection was carried out at Daniel Boone Middle School situated at 1845 Weavertown Rd, Douglassville, PA 19518. Observed a build-up of residue on the non-food contact surface of the ice machine.

On March 26, 2024, at Daniel Boone Area Schools Amity Intermediate located at 200 Boone Dr, Douglassville, PA 19518. Observed a build-up of residue on the non-food contact surface of the ice machine.

On March 27, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Giant Food Store #6486 in Kutztown. Several violations were noted during the assessment. Cases of food, in the walk-in freezer are stored in direct contact with condensation that has dripped and froze onto the exterior of the cases. Non-food contact surfaces (fan guards in walk-in coolers) not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dust. The handwash sinks located in the meat, seafood, bakery, and deli areas do not have water at a temperature of at least 85°F. Fruit flies observed on the walls and ceiling of the deli prep and bakery prep area. Floor area of the walk-in cooler below shelves where chicken breading is done was observed with excessive flour and debris on the floor and in need of cleaning. Working containers in vegetable prep area and bakery area, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On March 27, 2024, at G&J Pizzeria & Bakery located at 501 Main St, Blandon, PA 19510. Bowls were observed stored in three bulk flour containers in the bakery. Souffle cups were observed stored in three containers of spices in the pizzeria. Corrected. The handwash sinks in the pizzeria and bakery area were blocked by dirty dishes and not accessible at all times for employee use. Corrected. Spray bottles in utility sink and dish area, used for storing chemicals, were not marked with the common name of the chemical.

On March 27, 2024, at Blue Mountain Family Restaurant located at 24 Roadside Dr, Shartlesville, PA 19554. Food contact surface of ice scoop is not smooth, easily cleanable and/or resistant to pitting, cracking or scratching. Walls in the ware washing machine area has plastic hanging up and is not an easily cleanable material. Observed cardboard being utilized as a floor covering. Spray bottle in front counter area was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On March 30, 2024, at Schell’s Dairy Swirl located at 4625 5th St, Temple, PA 19560. Personal beverages/items stored on multiple countertops/food prep areas. Designate a space for personal beverages. Observed food (case of bananas) stored directly on the floor in back storage room, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Mops are not being hung to air dry.

On March 30, 2024, at Rittenhouse Village at Muhlenberg located at 2900 Lawn Terrace, Reading, PA 19605. Personal beverages stored on multiple countertops/food prep areas. Designate a space for personal beverages. Cutting board is not removable on steam stable shelf. It cannot be easily disassembled using common handheld tools for cleaning and inspection. Observed steam well interiors in the kitchen/dining room areas with soil accumulation. Observed utensils stored with handles in all directions. Store cooks’ utensils and resident silverware with handles in same direction. There is not a Food Employee Certified employee/manager currently employed by the facility. Not in compliance with Food Employee Certification Act. Food Employee Certification required within 90 days. The floor / wall juncture in dry storage room is not coved and closed to 1/32 inch. Wall in the desk/work area in kitchen has a hole and in need of repair. Ceiling vents are soiled/dusty/rusted. Tracking between ceiling tiles is dusty/rusted and can potentially contaminate food/equipment.

On March 30, 2024, at Best Taco Mexican Food located at 423 Water St, Temple, PA 19560. Birria was held at 115°F, in the prep area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Corrected on inspection.

On March 30, 2024, at Arby’s Restaurant located at 3210 N 5th St, Reading, PA 19605. Food was held at 44.4°F, in the lower bain marie compartment, rather than 41°F or below as required. Upper bain marie with bulk of cold food holding cooling adequately. Food items removed to alternate refrigeration. Walk-in refrigerator fan guard is dusty. Observed rear storage room floor with peeling surface areas prohibiting proper cleaning.

Other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Big Lots #1754, China House, Exeter Sunoco Food Mart, New Pied Piper Diner, Adams & Bright Drugstore, Exeter Twp. SD Reiffton Elem, Exeter Twp. SD Sr High School, Malizzi Cakes & Pastries Mobile Unit, Mimi’s Place, River Rock Academy @ Amity Primary Center, Sheetz in Shoemakersville, Schaeffer Catering LLC, Alsace Manor Fire Co Social Quarters, Tipsy Times, Violet Vintage Wine Company, Dollar General #1058 and Haven Farmstead.
